In the ICU, Ben’s health continues to decline
The fluorescent lights hummed above us, casting a sterile glare over everything. I held Ben’s hand, his fingers cool against my palm, and fought back tears. “I’m not giving up, you know,” he croaked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“You’re going to fight this,” I encouraged, brushing the hair from his damp forehead. “We’ll get you into that trial. You need to stabilize first, right?”
He nodded weakly, but I could see the fatigue in his eyes. I had seen him battle through so much already. “Promise me you won’t leave,” he said, eyes locked onto mine. “I need you.”
“I promise,” I whispered, squeezing his hand tighter.
After hours of watching him sleep, I finally pulled myself away to speak with the doctor. I found him in the corridor, reviewing Ben’s charts. “Doctor, about the trial… We need to know if it can start soon. He needs hope,” I said, desperation creeping into my voice.
The doctor glanced up, his expression serious. “It’s possible if he stabilizes. There are risks—significant ones—but it could prolong his life.”
“I’m willing to take those risks. We both are,” I insisted, the weight of the situation crashing down on me. “What are the next steps?”
“We’ll need to monitor him closely,” he replied, then hesitated. “I suggest you prepare yourself for what’s to come. The treatment isn’t guaranteed to be effective.”
As I returned to Ben’s room, all I could think about were those words. The night stretched on, and my eyes grew heavy. I closed them for just a moment, the sterile smell of the room swirling around me.
Then I heard it—a hushed conversation from the nurses’ station. I strained to listen as a nurse spoke about my husband. “He’s a part of the experimental trial, but the side effects… They could be devastating.”
“What do you mean?” another nurse asked, concern etched on her face.
“I’ve seen it happen. If he’s pushed too far, it could… it could be life-threatening.”
My heart raced. Was the doctor hiding this from me? I had to stay by Ben’s side, but now a new wave of fear gripped me.
Desperate to get Ben into the trial before it’s too late
I rushed to the nursing station, my heart pounding in my chest. “Please, you have to help me,” I pleaded, looking wildly between the nurses. “Ben needs to be part of that trial. His life depends on it!”
One of the nurses glanced at me, her eyebrows knitting together. “If he stabilizes, we can prioritize his case.”
“But what if he doesn’t? I just heard—” I stopped, glancing back at Ben’s room. “He’s fighting, but I’m terrified it’ll be too late.”
As I spoke, I caught a snippet of a familiar voice from the corner of the station. It was the same nurse who had whispered to me before. “I think he’s been in contact with someone outside the hospital. Someone who’s not supposed to be involved.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Who? What do you mean?”
“I don’t know, but it’s concerning. I think they’re manipulating him.”
Frantically, I turned and bolted back to Ben’s room, every worst-case scenario playing out in my mind. I burst through the door, but the sight that met me stopped me cold.
His room was empty. The bed unmade. Panic surged within me. “Where’s Ben?” I demanded. A nurse nearby looked at me, her expression grim.
“He’s been taken for an emergency procedure,” she said, her voice low.
Shock coursed through me. “What? No! He was supposed to be here! I need to see him!”
But the nurse only shook her head. “I’m sorry, but you’ll have to wait.”
