Finding the Letter
I carefully lifted the mattress, my heart racing. Beneath it, a folder lay hidden, thick with papers. I pulled it out, the weight of my curiosity pressing down on me.
Medical documents. Charts filled with alarming statistics. But it was the letter that caught my breath.
“Dear [Your Name],” it began, written in Ben’s familiar scrawl. “I’m sorry for not telling you sooner. I didn’t want to get your hopes up. There’s a treatment—a trial—that could change everything. I’m trying to give us more time.”
My fingers trembled over the paper. Betrayal mixed with a desperate glimmer of hope. How long had he been planning this? Why hadn’t he told me? He had been fighting this battle alone, but why? Did he think I couldn’t handle it?
I was torn, emotions swirling like a storm inside me. “How could he keep this from me?” I thought, and yet, another voice whispered, “Maybe this is our chance.”
The door creaked open, and I hastily shoved the folder back under the mattress just as Ben returned, the traces of the bathroom visit still lingering on him. His weak smile faltered when he saw my face.
Confronting Ben
<p“Ben… we need to talk.” My voice was steady, but my heart pounded painfully against my ribs.
He looked at me, confusion washing over his features. “What about?”
I took a breath, my fury and worry battling for dominance. “I found a letter. You didn’t tell me about the treatment.”
His gaze dropped to his hands, the IV pole rattling softly beside him. “I didn’t want to get your hopes up. I was afraid—”
“Afraid of what? Of me?” I interrupted, feeling heat rise in my chest. “You didn’t trust me enough to share this?”
“I was trying to protect you! What if it didn’t work? I can’t bear to watch you get hurt again!” His voice cracked, the pain evident.
“You’re hurting me now! I could have supported you, Ben! We’re supposed to do this together!” I felt tears prick my eyes as the anger bubbled in my throat.
For a moment, silence hung between us like a thick fog. He reached out, his hand trembling. “I never wanted to lie to you. I just—”
“Just what? Wasted precious time?” My voice was sharper than I intended, cutting through the air.
“I thought I had more time,” he finally admitted, his eyes glistening. “I want to pursue this trial. I want to fight for us.”
With a shaky breath, I nodded. “Then let’s do it together.”
Just as we’d reached an understanding, the door swung open, and a doctor rushed in, urgency etched into his features.
“Ben, we need to move you to intensive care. Your condition has worsened.”
A cold wave of dread crashed over me. I glanced at Ben, and the fear in his eyes mirrored my own. “What? No, wait!” I shouted, but the doctor was already reaching for the charts.
As the doctor announced Ben’s transfer to intensive care, I heard a faint alarm sound from the ICU.
