Frantically, I rushed through the hallways, my mind racing. “Where’s Ben?” I demanded, cornering a doctor in a stark white coat. His expression shifted, concern lining his features. I barely let him speak. “What’s happening with his treatment? Please, I need to know!”

He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder as if the truth might be hiding in the shadows. “Ben was involved in an experimental trial prior to his diagnosis.” My stomach dropped, and I pressed for more. “What do you mean? Wasn’t he just diagnosed?”

“Yes, but the trial started before he ever showed symptoms. He’s not the only patient.”

My heart raced as the implications settled in. “What are you saying? This has all been a lie?” But his silence screamed louder than any words. My knees threatened to buckle beneath me. I felt the world tilting, everything I thought I knew about our love unraveling like an old sweater. How could I not have seen it?

I needed to find Ben. I turned on my heel, my insides churning like a storm. This wasn’t just about love anymore; it was about trust, manipulation, everything I had believed turned into dust.

The fluorescent lights flickered as I burst into Ben’s room. “Ben!” I shouted, but the room was empty. Panic clawed at my throat. “Where is he?” A nurse quickly informed me he’d been taken for an emergency procedure. My heart raced as I paced the floor, grappling with emotions I couldn’t name. Was he in danger?

I waited, every minute a lifetime. When Ben finally reappeared, he looked frail, exhaustion etched deep into his features. I rushed to his side, but my heart was heavy with the weight of my discoveries. “We need to talk,” I insisted, my voice trembling. “What else aren’t you telling me?”

“I… I thought I was protecting you,” he stammered, eyes flickering with guilt. “I didn’t want you to worry.”

“Protecting me? By lying?” I felt the betrayal like a knife in my chest. “You’ve been part of this trial since before you got sick, haven’t you?”

He dropped his gaze, the silence deafening. “I needed money, and they offered… I thought it could help us, later.” His voice cracked. “I wanted to provide for you.”

“By playing with your life? Ben, you should have told me!” My voice broke as frustration boiled over. “You’re a participant in something dangerous, and you never once considered that I had a right to know!”

He winced as if my words were blows. “I was scared—I wanted to fix this, for us. I thought—”

“You thought what? That hiding the truth would make everything okay?”

Then it happened. Ben staggered, clutching his side, and collapsed onto the floor. My heart leaped into my throat. “Ben!” I screamed, rushing to his side. Panic surged as I pressed my hands against him, begging him to stay with me.

As nurses rushed in, his eyes locked onto mine, filled with regret. “I wanted to provide for you, even if I couldn’t stay.” Those words hung in the air like a funeral dirge, too heavy to bear. I felt a volcanic eruption of emotions crash over me—betrayal, love, dread. The very treatment meant to save him, the plan he thought would secure our future, may have sealed his fate instead.
