The Best Homemade White Bread

  • by
  1. Activate the yeast: Pour the warm water into a large mixing bowl. Add the sugar and yeast and stir gently. Let the mixture stand for about 5–10 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients: Stir in the salt and vegetable oil or melted butter. Gradually add about 5½ cups of flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for approximately 8–10 minutes, gradually adding the remaining flour as needed. The dough should become smooth and elastic and should feel slightly tacky but not excessively sticky.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and turn it once to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the loaves: Gently punch down the dough to release excess air. Divide it into two equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place into two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.
  6. Second rise: Cover the pans loosely and let the dough rise for another 30–45 minutes, until the loaves have risen nicely above the edges of the pans.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the loaves for approximately 30–35 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  8. Finish with butter: Remove the bread from the oven and brush the tops with melted butter if desired. This gives the crust a softer texture and a lovely buttery flavor.
  9. Cool: Allow the loaves to rest in their pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack. Let them cool before slicing for the best texture.

The result is a soft, fluffy homemade white bread with a golden crust and that unmistakable fresh-baked flavor. Enjoy it warm with butter and jam, use it for sandwiches, or toast slices for a simple homemade breakfast.

Say “YES” if you’d love to have this fresh from the oven! 🍞❤️
