Sage Tea: A Traditional Herbal Drink for Everyday Wellness

  • by

Sage contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. This is one reason the herb continues to attract scientific interest.

However, laboratory activity does not prove that drinking sage tea will eliminate inflammation or treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis.

For persistent joint pain, appropriate exercise, weight management, physical therapy, and medical treatment may be much more effective.

Sage and Brain Health

Some research has investigated sage extracts and cognitive performance, including memory and attention. These findings are interesting, but they do not establish that sage tea prevents or treats dementia.

Dementia has many causes and requires proper medical evaluation. A healthy diet, regular physical activity, good sleep, management of cardiovascular risk factors, and staying socially and mentally active are more reliable ways to support long-term brain health.

What About Osteoporosis?

Sage tea cannot rebuild weakened bones or reverse osteoporosis.

Bone health depends on adequate calcium and vitamin D, protein, physical activity—especially weight-bearing exercise—and other factors. People with osteoporosis may also require prescription treatment to reduce fracture risk.

If you are concerned about bone loss, a healthcare professional can determine whether bone-density testing or treatment is appropriate.

Important Safety Information

Sage is generally used in small culinary quantities, but large amounts or concentrated sage preparations are different. Some sage species contain thujone, a compound that can be harmful in high doses.

Avoid consuming large quantities of sage or concentrated sage oil. Pregnant or breastfeeding people and anyone taking regular medication should consult a healthcare professional before using medicinal amounts.

Sage tea can be a pleasant, aromatic addition to a balanced lifestyle, but it should not be promoted as a replacement for treatment of dementia, arthritis, osteoporosis, or other medical conditions.
