The police found the teddy bear in a storage room.
It was an old stuffed rabbit Maya had owned since she was four.
Inside the lining was a tiny USB drive.
The investigator connected it to a laptop.
There were dozens of files.
Videos.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
Most were ordinary.
Then we found one recorded three nights earlier.
Elena was sitting at the kitchen table.
Her face was pale.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something has happened to me.”
My blood ran cold.
Elena continued.
“Julian has been hiding money.”
I stared at the screen.
“He has been using other people’s identities and moving money through several accounts. I found the records.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I confronted him.”
The video paused briefly.
Then continued.
“He told me I had no idea what I was dealing with.”
She looked toward the doorway.
“Maya saw us arguing.”
Elena’s voice broke.
“He locked her outside because he didn’t want her telling anyone.”
I covered my mouth.
Then Elena whispered something that made the entire room silent.
“The things in the pool aren’t garbage.”
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
The detective looked at Julian.
“What did you put in that pool?”
Julian stared at the floor.
“I want a lawyer.”
Part 6 — The Real Reason
The investigation expanded immediately.
The black bags contained financial records, computer equipment, and documents connected to a fraudulent business operation.
But the police still couldn’t find Elena.
Then Maya remembered something.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Mommy told me something.”
“What?”
“She said if she disappeared, I should find the blue house.”
I froze.
“What blue house?”
Maya pointed toward the neighborhood.
“There’s a little blue house where she used to meet someone.”
The police checked Elena’s recent phone records.
One address appeared repeatedly.
A small blue house about twelve miles away.
Officers went there that evening.
Elena was inside.
Alive.
Weak and frightened, but alive.
She had been hiding there after escaping from Julian.
When she saw Maya, she broke down crying.
“My baby.”
Maya ran into her arms.
I stood behind them.
For the first time in three days, I saw my daughter smile.
