The Black Bags in the Pool
Part 2 — “Daddy, Please Don’t Look”
Maya suddenly froze in my arms.
Her fingers tightened around my shirt.
“Daddy…”
“I’m here.”
She stared past my shoulder toward the swimming pool.
“Please don’t look.”
I turned anyway.
The water was dark and cloudy.
Several black bags floated beneath the surface, caught against the pool’s cracked steps.
My stomach twisted.
“What are those?”
Maya buried her face against my chest.
“I don’t know.”
“Did Julian put them there?”
She didn’t answer.
“Maya?”
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
“He told me never to talk about the pool.”
I carried her toward the house.
Then we heard a noise.
A car door slammed.
Maya grabbed my neck.
“Daddy, hide me.”
I turned toward the driveway.
Julian was standing beside his SUV.
He stared at me.
Then at the broken cage.
Then at Maya.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Finally, Julian smiled.
It was the wrong kind of smile.
“What are you doing here?”
I held Maya tighter.
“Where’s Elena?”
“She isn’t home.”
“Where is she?”
Julian shrugged.
“She went out.”
I looked at the pool.
Then back at him.
“What are those bags?”
His smile vanished.
“Nothing.”
“Then why did my daughter tell me you warned her never to talk about the pool?”
Julian’s face hardened.
“Maya has a very active imagination.”
I stepped toward the gate.
“We’re leaving.”
Julian moved in front of it.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“Move.”
“You can’t take her.”
“She is my daughter.”
“And Elena has custody.”
I pulled out my phone.
“Then we’ll let the police decide.”
Julian’s expression changed instantly.
And that’s when I knew.
He was afraid.
Part 3 — The First Secret
I called 911.
Within minutes, officers arrived.
Julian tried to explain everything away.
He said the cage was an old kennel.
He said Maya had locked herself inside while playing.
He claimed the bags in the pool contained damaged furniture and garbage.
But Maya wouldn’t let go of my hand.
One of the officers crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, can you tell me what happened?”
Maya looked at me.
I nodded.
She swallowed.
“Julian put me in the cage.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw something.”
“What did you see?”
Maya looked toward the pool.
“I saw Mommy crying.”
The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.
“When?”
“Three nights ago.”
“And what happened after that?”
Maya’s voice trembled.
“Julian told Mommy to get into the car.”
“What car?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where did they go?”
Maya shook her head.
“They came back later.”
“And your mother?”
Maya looked down.
“She wasn’t talking.”
My heart pounded.
“Was she hurt?”
Maya hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Then she whispered:
“She was scared of Julian.”
The officer stood.
“I’m going to need to speak with the adults involved.”
But before he could do anything else, another officer approached from the pool.
“Sir.”
He held up a waterproof evidence bag.
Inside was a small object.
A woman’s bracelet.
I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to Elena.
Part 4 — Where Was Elena?
The police searched the house.
Elena’s phone was on the kitchen counter.
Her purse was still in the bedroom.
Her car was in the garage.
But Elena was nowhere.
Julian insisted she had gone away voluntarily.
Nobody believed him.
Especially after investigators examined the pool.
They removed the black bags one at a time.
The first contained old clothing.
The second contained broken household items.
The third contained several documents sealed inside plastic.
But the fourth bag changed everything.
Inside was Elena’s passport.
Her medication.
And a notebook.
My hands shook when an officer showed me the photograph of the contents.
“That’s hers,” I said.
The officer nodded.
Then another investigator came running from the backyard.
“We found something else.”
He held up a small memory card.
“Where did you find that?”
“Underneath the pool equipment.”
The officer looked at Julian.
“Do you know what this is?”
Julian said nothing.
Maya suddenly pulled my sleeve.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“I know that.”
She pointed at the memory card.
“That was Mommy’s.”
“How?”
“She put it in my teddy bear.”
I looked at her.
“Where is the teddy bear?”
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“Julian took it.”
