Epilogue: What I Told the Cameras

Three months later, sunlight blazed bright across the steps of the Kingsbridge Supreme Court.

I stood at the podium in a tailored navy suit, holding my healthy, thriving son, Atlas, tight against my chest.

The court proceedings had never really been a battle at all — they’d been closer to an execution. Faced with airtight telemetry data, video evidence, and the testimony of three horrified OR nurses who’d finally broken their silence, Weston’s entire defense simply collapsed on the spot.

His medical license was permanently revoked. The court granted me full, sole legal and physical custody of Atlas, alongside total forfeiture of Weston’s marital assets to cover the catastrophic damages he’d caused. As for Larissa, the hospital board terminated her employment immediately, and she now faced her own administrative charges for falsifying patient logs.

A pack of reporters swarmed the base of the courthouse steps, microphones thrust upward into the air as Weston slunk out through a side exit, stripped entirely of his title, his career, his wealth, and what remained of his family.

One reporter shouted out from the crowd. “Dr. Ashford! What do you have to say to Dr. Kane, now that it’s finally over?”

I adjusted Atlas gently in my arms and looked directly into the nearest camera lens, calm and entirely unyielding.

“I spent years saving lives in the ER by making hard, precise decisions under pressure,” I said clearly, evenly. “Removing a tumor isn’t so different, in the end, from removing a man who mistakes his own control for actual power.”

I turned my back on the assembled cameras, stepped into the waiting car, and drove away into a life that finally, entirely, beautifully belonged to me alone.
