Vaseline and Wrinkles: What This Simple 3-Minute Routine Can Really Do

  • by

You may have seen the viral claim that Vaseline can erase every wrinkle in just three minutes—even at age 70.

It sounds almost too good to be true, and that’s because it is. Petroleum jelly cannot erase wrinkles or reverse the natural aging process in three minutes. However, it can be a useful moisturizer, particularly for dry or very dry skin, and moisturizing can temporarily make fine lines look less noticeable.

So while the viral claim is exaggerated, there is a simple skincare routine worth trying if your skin needs extra moisture.

Why Does Vaseline Make Skin Look Smoother?

Vaseline is made with petrolatum, an occlusive ingredient that helps reduce water loss from the skin.

When dry skin becomes better hydrated, it can look softer, smoother, and more plump. This can temporarily make fine lines appear less prominent. Dermatologists specifically recommend ointments such as petroleum jelly for helping very dry skin retain moisture.

But there’s an important distinction:

Making dry skin look smoother is not the same as removing wrinkles.

Deep wrinkles, loose skin, and other structural changes caused by aging cannot simply be erased with a layer of petroleum jelly.

The Simple 3-Minute Moisture Routine

If you’d like to use petroleum jelly as part of your skincare routine, keep it simple.

Step 1: Gently Clean Your Face

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing, particularly if your skin is mature or sensitive.

Step 2: Leave Your Skin Slightly Damp
