For the next hour, the party moved forward, but the air remained fragile. My husband hovered around Funmi, introducing her to his colleagues, laughing louder than usual at her jokes, and trying to project an image of a man surrounded by people who adored him. Every few minutes, his eyes would scan the crowd searching for me, expecting to catch me sulking in a corner or whispering angrily to a friend.
Instead, he found me chatting pleasantly with his supervisor, handing out appetizers, and casually slipping out to the balcony to take brief calls. What he didn’t realize was that I wasn’t sulking at all. I was coordinating. While he was busy entertaining his ex and showing off our home, I had quietly made three trips to my work van parked around the corner, transferring the pre-packed bags that contained my life.
By six o’clock, the party reached its peak. Friends were gathered around the dining table, enjoying the spread, while my husband raised his glass to make a toast. He cleared his throat, inviting everyone to listen.
