Today I Turn 96 — No Wife, No Kids, So I Baked My Own Birthday Cake

  • by

I made one wish.

Not for money.

Not for fame.

Not even for another hundred years.

I wished that anyone who feels forgotten would remember that they still matter.

I wished that people would call the elderly relatives they haven’t spoken to in too long.

Visit someone who lives alone.

Sit with someone who has nobody.

Ask them about their childhood.

Listen to their stories.

Because every older person carries a lifetime inside them.

And sometimes, all they need is someone willing to listen.

Step 12: Happy 96th Birthday

So today, I turned 96.

No wife.

No children.

No big celebration.

Just a homemade cake and a lifetime of memories.

And perhaps that’s okay.

Because when I look back at my life, I don’t want to count only the things I didn’t have.

I want to remember everything I did have.

The people I met.

The places I saw.

The work I accomplished.

The gardens I planted.

The mornings I woke up.

The sunsets I watched.

The countless ordinary moments that quietly became my life.

So tonight, I’ll sit down with my cake.

I’ll light the candles.

And before I blow them out, I’ll smile.

Because I made it to 96.

And that’s worth celebrating. ❤️🎂
