— Someone is knocking in there.
The man strained his ears, but heard nothing.
— It’s the wood. Because of the temperature, materials can produce similar sounds.
The coffin continued to move towards the fire.
She shouted:
— STOP!
The employee pressed the emergency button.
The coffin stopped almost in front of the oven.
« Open it, » the woman demanded.
— Madam, I understand your state, but your husband has been officially declared dead.
— Then you have nothing to fear. Open it.
The employee tried to protest, but Anna was already shouting and demanding that the manager be called. Finally, the coffin was moved back.
Two employees approached and began removing the fasteners. When they lifted the cover, one of the men suddenly recoiled. Anna looked inside and paled.
What they saw
Michael was lying down in the same suit he’d worn when she’d said goodbye to him a few minutes earlier. But now, one of his hands was near the lid. And there were fresh traces of blood on his fingers.
Anna leaned closer. And, at that moment, her husband’s chest rose almost imperceptibly.
He’s breathing!
The employee immediately called an ambulance.
Michael was taken to intensive care, and it was only several hours later that doctors were able to explain what had happened.
The day before his supposed death, the man had started taking a new medication. In combination with another treatment, it had caused an extremely rare reaction: his blood pressure and pulse had dropped so drastically that, during the initial assessment, his condition was mistaken for death.
What he said
But the most surprising thing was something else entirely. Michael later recounted that he regained consciousness while already inside the coffin. At first, he didn’t understand where he was. There was total darkness around him, and his body barely obeyed him.
He tried to shout, but couldn’t make a sound. So the man raised his hand and began to strike the lid. He could hear the mechanism rattling and feel the coffin move. Michael had already decided that no one would hear him. But Anna heard him.
A week later, the woman was again sitting next to her husband, but this time it wasn’t next to a coffin: it was in a hospital room.
Key points to remember
Sometimes, an intuition, a detail that doesn’t quite add up, an inner voice that refuses to accept the obvious can change everything. Anna didn’t listen to the reassuring explanations: she listened to her heart. And that day, that’s what saved her husband’s life.
