The Old-Fashioned Oven Cleaning Trick That Still Works

If your oven is covered in baked-on grease and stubborn food stains, you don’t always need harsh chemicals. One classic method uses steam and a dishwasher tablet (or hot water alone) to help loosen grime, making cleanup much easier.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 dishwasher tablet (optional, but effective)
  • 2–3 cups of hot water
  • An oven-safe baking dish
  • Rubber gloves
  • A soft sponge or microfiber cloth

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

  • Remove the oven racks.
  • Brush away loose crumbs and burnt food.

Step 2: Fill the Baking Dish

Pour 2–3 cups of hot water into an oven-safe dish.

If using a dishwasher tablet, place one tablet into the water and let it begin to dissolve.

Step 3: Heat the Oven

  • Place the dish on the center rack.
  • Heat the oven to 250°F (120°C).
  • Leave it for 30–45 minutes.

The steam helps soften baked-on grease and food residue.

Step 4: Let the Oven Cool

Turn off the oven and allow it to cool until it’s warm but safe to touch.

Step 5: Wipe Away the Grime

Using a damp sponge or microfiber cloth:

  • Wipe the walls and door.
  • Clean the bottom of the oven.
  • Rinse the sponge frequently with clean water.

Most grease and residue should come off with much less scrubbing.

Step 6: Clean the Oven Racks

Soak the racks in hot, soapy water for 20–30 minutes, then scrub gently with a non-scratch pad before rinsing and drying.

Extra Tip for Stubborn Spots

For tough stains:

  1. Mix ½ cup baking soda with a few tablespoons of water to make a thick paste.
  2. Apply it to the stained areas.
  3. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
  4. Scrub gently and wipe clean.

Safety Tips

  • Never mix cleaning products such as bleach and ammonia.
  • Make sure the baking dish is oven-safe.
  • Wear gloves if using a dishwasher tablet, as it may irritate the skin.
  • Avoid using abrasive metal scrubbers on enamel-coated oven surfaces.

The Bottom Line

This simple steam-cleaning method won’t make a heavily soiled oven spotless in minutes, but it can loosen grease and baked-on food, making the final cleanup much faster and easier. Regular cleaning every few months helps prevent stubborn buildup and keeps your oven looking and working its best.
