Strangers are not allowed to ride in my SUV
« Strangers don’t get a ride in my SUV. If you’re really my son’s wife, then learn to get there yourself. »
Teresa Alcantara spoke these words through the half-open car window as heavy rain poured down on the bus station in Syracuse, New York.
Sofia Mendoza stood on the wet asphalt. Two suitcases lay at her feet. It was her first visit to her husband Javier’s family since their wedding, and she had traveled from New York City – with expensive gifts for everyone.
The family estate, The Pines Manor, was nine miles away.
Javier was sitting in the passenger seat.
Sofia waited for him to open the door.
But he didn’t.
« Honey, don’t make a scene, » he murmured, staring at his phone. « That’s just how my mother is. Just go with it. »
His sister Mariana began filming the situation with her mobile phone.
“Look at the little princess from the city,” she laughed. “A little rain won’t kill you. Consider it your first lesson.”
Teresa smiled.
« A daughter-in-law only truly belongs to the family when she has learned to obey. »
Sofia looked at her calmly.
« Are you really sure that’s what you want? »
“One hundred percent,” Teresa replied.
« Okay. »
The SUV drove off, leaving Sofia behind in the rain.
She went back to the terminal, secured her luggage, checked the route on her phone, and set off on foot. Before leaving, she shared her location with her mother, Elena Mendoza.
Half an hour later, Mariana posted the video in the family group with the caption: « The first lesson for the new girl. »
Everyone laughed and supported Teresa.
Javier read the news, but didn’t defend his wife with a single word.
What the family didn’t know: Elena Mendoza was the CEO of Altavista Hospitality Group, a multi-million-dollar luxury resort company. That same afternoon, she was scheduled to visit The Pines Manor for an important three-year business partnership.
When Elena saw Sofia’s location moving slowly through the storm, and then saw the video of her daughter being humiliated, she made a single phone call.
« Cancel the viewing appointment. »
« Completely? »
« Completely. And remove them from all future negotiations. »
A few minutes later, the manager of The Pines Manor received a phone call.
“Mrs. Alcantara,” he said palely, “Altavista has just cancelled everything.”
Teresa stared at him.
« Why? »
« Because the woman you left in the rain is Elena Mendoza’s only daughter. »
Javier’s mobile phone slipped out of his hand.
He immediately started calling Sofia.
When he finally found her in a diner, he was desperate.
« You need to talk to your mother! This contract was everything! »
Sofia looked at him.
« When your mother left me in the rain – why didn’t you get out of the car? »
« I didn’t want to make a scene. »
« And now? »
« Now my family is losing everything! »
Sofia understood.
He hadn’t come back because he was worried about her. He had come back because the money and the contract had disappeared.
Nevertheless, she returned to the estate with him.
The family was already waiting in the living room. Teresa hurried towards them with a forced smile.
« Oh, my darling, that was just a joke! »
« Don’t touch me, » Sofia said.
Mariana laughed.
« Don’t be so dramatic. It was just a short walk. »
Sofia connected her mobile phone to the large screen.
The video has been played.
She then showed the chat of the family group – including Teresa’s message from that morning:
« Today we’ll show that city girl who’s in charge. I’m going to make her walk from the bus station so she comes down off her high horse. »
The room fell silent.
Then Sofia showed something else.
Receipts and bank transfers.
Over the past three months, she had paid almost $70,000 for the family’s expenses: Mariana’s wedding, Teresa’s designer clothes, hotel rooms, flowers, and even debts related to the property.
