Swollen Feet and High Blood Sugar: What You Need to Know

If blood glucose is very high, drinking water may help prevent dehydration, but it is not a substitute for diabetes medication or medical treatment. A person should follow the glucose-management plan provided by their healthcare professional rather than experimenting with unproven remedies.

Certain symptoms accompanying high blood sugar require urgent attention. Severe thirst and frequent urination combined with vomiting, abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, confusion, extreme weakness, or difficulty staying awake can be signs of a serious metabolic emergency and require immediate medical care.

The idea of making diabetes disappear in 15 minutes is appealing, but diabetes cannot be cured by a homemade drink or a single food. A temporary change in a glucose reading also does not mean that the underlying condition has disappeared.

The safest approach is to treat blood glucose readings seriously, understand what is causing changes, and work with a healthcare professional to develop an appropriate diabetes management plan. Natural foods and drinks can certainly be part of a healthy diet, but they should complement—not replace—evidence-based diabetes care.
