Remember Saving Bacon Grease in a Can on the Stove? A Timeless Kitchen Tradition

1. Frying Eggs

One of the most popular uses was frying eggs.

A small spoonful of bacon grease creates crispy edges, a tender yolk, and a delicious smoky flavor that butter or vegetable oil can’t quite match.

2. Cooking Potatoes

Whether making hash browns, home fries, or fried potatoes, bacon grease gives potatoes a crispy golden crust and rich taste.

Steps

  1. Heat one tablespoon of bacon grease in a skillet.
  2. Add diced or sliced potatoes.
  3. Cook over medium heat.
  4. Turn occasionally until golden brown.
  5. Season with salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs.

3. Seasoning Vegetables

Green beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and collard greens become much more flavorful with a small amount of bacon grease.

Simply sauté the vegetables in a teaspoon or two before adding broth or seasonings.

4. Cornbread

Many Southern cooks still grease their cast-iron skillet with bacon grease before pouring in cornbread batter.

The result is a wonderfully crisp, flavorful crust.

5. Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Instead of butter, spread a thin layer of bacon grease on the outside of the bread before grilling.

It creates a crisp, golden sandwich with a subtle smoky taste.

6. Flavoring Beans

A spoonful of bacon grease can be added while cooking:

  • Pinto beans
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Navy beans
  • Lentils

It adds depth of flavor without needing much additional fat.
