That afternoon, my father arrived.
He didn’t say much.
He simply hugged me.
Then he looked at Ellie.
“She’ll be okay,” he said.
“I know.”
He nodded.
“Now we deal with the adults.”
I handed him the recording.
He listened once.
Then he put his phone away.
“Have you contacted the police?”
“Not yet.”
“Then that’s the next step.”
I hesitated.
“Dad, I don’t want Ellie dragged through a court battle.”
“You’re not doing this for revenge.”
He looked at me seriously.
“You’re doing it because someone hurt your child and then tried to erase what happened.”
I knew he was right.
That evening, Ben came back.
But he wasn’t alone.
Linda was with him.
She walked into the hospital room carrying flowers.
“Where’s my granddaughter?”
I stood between her and Ellie.
“You’re not coming closer.”
Linda’s face hardened.
“You’re still angry over an accident?”
I didn’t answer.
She looked at Ben.
“See? This is what I’ve been talking about.”
Gary stepped into the doorway behind her.
“You’re turning this into a family war.”
I looked at them.
“No.”
I took out my phone.
“You did that yourselves.”
Linda’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?”
I pressed play.
Her own voice filled the room.
She shouldn’t have reached for Cole’s cup.
Linda froze.
Then the next voice.
Just say it was an accident.
Gary looked at Ben.
Ben looked at the floor.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Linda whispered:
“You recorded us?”
“Yes.”
Her face turned red.
“You have no right.”
I looked at her.
“You threw coffee at my two-year-old daughter.”
Then I stepped aside.
“And now everyone gets to hear the truth.”
