Six months later, Daniel stood in court.

Emily testified.

She wore a long sleeve over her healing arm.

Her hand was permanently damaged.

She had lost some movement in two fingers.

But she was alive.

The prosecutor played the recordings.

The jury watched the security footage.

They saw Daniel attempting to stop emergency treatment.

They heard Mary discussing the plan.

They saw the forged medical documents.

And they heard Daniel say:

“She won’t survive long enough to tell anyone.”

The courtroom went silent.

The verdict came quickly.

Guilty.

Daniel was sentenced to decades in prison.

Mary received a separate sentence for conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.

The private doctor who performed the illegal procedure was also arrested.

Emily eventually received her inheritance back.

But she told me something I’ll never forget.

“Money was never what I wanted.”

“What did you want?”

She looked down at her scarred hand.

“I wanted someone to believe me.”

I smiled.

“I believed you.”

She looked at me.

“You saved my life.”

I shook my head.

“You saved your own life.”

She frowned.

“How?”

“Because you survived long enough for the truth to come out.”
