My ten-year-old daughter stopped answering my calls for three days

Several months later, I asked Maya if she wanted to talk about what happened.

She was sitting at the kitchen table drawing pictures.

She thought for a moment.

Then she said:

“I don’t want to remember the cage.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to remember when you opened it.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“You remember that?”

She nodded.

“You said, ‘I’ve got you.’”

I smiled.

“I meant it.”

She reached across the table and took my hand.

“You really did.”

“Yes.”

She looked at her drawing.

It showed three people standing beside a house.

The sky above them was bright blue.

And there was no cage.

No pool.

No black bags.

Just three people holding hands.

Part 10 — One Year Later

A year after that terrible Sunday, Maya and I drove past Elena’s old house.

The property had been sold.

The pool had been removed.

The cage was gone.

Maya looked through the window.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can we stop?”

I pulled over.

She got out.

We stood quietly across the street.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Maya smiled.

“It’s gone.”

“What?”

“The cage.”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

She took my hand.

“I think I’m ready to forget it.”

“You don’t have to forget.”

She looked up at me.

“Why?”

“Because forgetting isn’t how you heal.”

She thought about that.

“How do you heal?”

I squeezed her hand.

“You remember that you survived.”

She smiled.

“And that you came for me.”

I pulled her into a hug.

“I’ll always come for you.”

She hugged me tighter.

And as we walked back to the car, I looked at the empty yard one last time.

The cage was gone.

The pool was gone.

The fear was slowly disappearing too.

But I knew one thing would stay with me forever.

The moment I saw my little girl behind those metal bars.

The moment she looked at me and whispered,

“Daddy?”

And the promise I made without hesitation:

“I’ve got you.”

This time, I meant it.

And this time, nobody was ever going to take her away from me again.
