My Son Got Into A Fight At School Because Another Boy Wouldn’t Stop Bullying His Little Sister

  • by

“Mr. Carter?” he said. “You know Mrs. Carter?”

Mark swallowed.

“She’s my wife.”

The room became completely silent.

I stared at him.

Then I looked at Stefan.

Then back at Mark.

My mind struggled to make sense of what I was seeing.

The woman stepped into the room.

She looked at Mark.

Then she looked at me.

And something changed in her expression.

Her eyes widened.

She whispered, “Oh my God.”

I could barely hear myself speak.

“Mark… what are you doing here?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward Stefan.

The boy was sitting perfectly still in the chair.

He wasn’t frightened anymore.

He was watching his father.

His father.

The words echoed inside my head.

I turned toward Stefan.

“Is that your father?”

Stefan nodded.

“Yes.”

My heart began pounding.

“What’s his name?”

The boy looked confused by the question.

“Mark.”

I felt something inside me break.

I turned back toward my husband.

“You told me our son died.”

Mark closed his eyes.

The woman beside him gasped.

The principal looked between us.

“I’m sorry,” he said slowly. “I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding.”

“No.”

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“There hasn’t been a misunderstanding.”

I pointed at Stefan.

“That boy looks exactly like my son.”

Mark finally spoke.

“Emma…”

I hadn’t heard him say my name like that in years.

Not with fear.

Not with guilt.

With desperation.

“Don’t,” I whispered.

He took one step toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t come near me.”

Cole suddenly grabbed my hand.

“Mom?”

I looked down at him.

His face was bruised from the fight.

There was a small cut above his lip.

But his eyes were fixed on Mark.

“Why is Dad here?”

My stomach dropped.

I had forgotten that Cole was in the room.

I looked at Mark.

He looked at Cole.

Then at Stefan.

And for the first time, I saw something in my husband’s eyes that I had never seen before.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

As though he was looking at two pieces of a secret he had spent eight years trying to keep hidden.

I turned toward the principal.

“I need you to tell me exactly why my husband was called here.”

The principal cleared his throat.

“Stefan’s mother listed Mr. Carter as his emergency contact.”

My blood ran cold.

“His mother?”

I looked at the woman.

She was crying now.

“My name is Laura,” she said quietly.

I stared at her.

“Laura what?”

“Laura Bennett.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Until Mark whispered:

“Emma, please.”

I turned toward him.

“Who is she?”

Mark said nothing.

Laura wiped a tear from her cheek.

“He never told you?”

My heart began beating faster.

“Told me what?”

She looked at Mark.

Then at Stefan.

Then back at me.

“Mark was Stefan’s father.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“I mean he was his father before Stefan was born.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Laura looked at Mark again.

“He wasn’t just Stefan’s father.”

She hesitated.

“He was his father when Stefan was still in the hospital.”

I felt dizzy.

“What hospital?”

Laura’s lips parted.

“The same hospital where your twins were born.”

Everything stopped.

The principal’s expression changed.

Mark’s face became completely blank.

And I suddenly understood why.

The room.

The hospital.

The twins.

The bassinet.

The baby I had never seen.

Eight years of grief.

I looked at Mark.

“You knew.”

He didn’t respond.

“You knew this entire time.”

“Emma—”

“You knew.”

My voice cracked.

Cole squeezed my hand.

“Mom, what’s happening?”

I couldn’t answer him.

I couldn’t take my eyes off Mark.

“Where was my other baby?”

Mark lowered his head.

Laura started crying harder.

“Mark told me never to tell you.”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She nodded.

“He came to me eight years ago.”

Mark’s voice suddenly rose.

“Laura, stop.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I kept quiet because I was scared.”

“Scared of what?”

She looked directly at me.

“Scared of losing my son.”

My entire body went numb.

I stared at Stefan.

He was looking at me now.

There was something strangely calm in his expression.

Almost as if he had already suspected the truth.

I walked toward him.

Slowly.

One step.

Then another.

Stefan didn’t move.
