My daughter was only SEVENTEEN when she disappeared. Sixteen years went by before I spotted a beach bag being carried by a stranger

  • by

Months passed as investigators worked through the evidence.

My ex-husband was eventually arrested.

The case against him was complicated by the passage of sixteen years, but the evidence was enough to prove that he had deliberately deceived our daughter and concealed her whereabouts.

When I finally saw him again, I expected anger.

Instead, I felt nothing.

He looked older.

Smaller.

Human.

For sixteen years, I had imagined confronting him.

Now that moment had arrived.

“Why?” I asked.

He looked at the floor.

“She was going to tell you about something I had done.”

“What?”

He refused to answer.

The detective later explained that my daughter had discovered financial fraud involving him.

He feared she would expose him.

So he manipulated her.

He knew exactly which words would hurt her most.

He used my argument against me.

He made her believe I had rejected her.

And then he disappeared her from my life.

For sixteen years.

When I left the police station that day, I didn’t look back.

My daughter was waiting outside.

She took my hand.

“Mom.”

I smiled through my tears.

“Yes?”

“I want to go home.”

I squeezed her hand.

“You are home.”
