My Client Told Me, “Don’t Worry About the Stove, I’m Going to Replace It.” I Said, “Give Me a Minute.”

After the waiting period, use a damp sponge or microfiber cloth to wipe away the loosened grease. You may need to repeat the process on particularly stubborn areas.

A plastic scraper can help remove softened food residue, but avoid using sharp metal tools that could scratch the oven surface.

Once the majority of the grime has been removed, wipe the entire oven several times with clean, damp cloths to remove leftover cleaning residue. Finally, dry the interior with a clean towel.

The oven racks can be soaked separately in warm water with dish soap. Allow them to soak before scrubbing away grease and burnt-on food. Dry the racks completely before putting them back inside the oven.

There is one important safety point: never mix this homemade cleaner with commercial oven cleaners, bleach, ammonia, or other chemical cleaning products. Combining cleaning chemicals can create dangerous fumes.

Also check your oven manufacturer’s instructions before using homemade cleaners. Some ovens have special interior coatings or self-cleaning surfaces that require specific cleaning methods. Avoid applying liquids directly to heating elements, electrical components, vents, or door seals.

You may not be able to restore every damaged or heavily neglected oven to a brand-new condition, but removing layers of grease and baked-on food can make an enormous difference in its appearance.

So the next time someone says, “That oven is too dirty—just replace it,” give it a proper deep clean first. Sometimes a little baking soda, dish soap, lemon juice, patience, and elbow grease can turn a neglected oven into one that looks surprisingly clean again.
