Mulberry Leaves: Potential Health Benefits, Traditional Uses, and How to Use Them Safely

  • by

Mulberry trees are known for their delicious fruits, but their leaves have also been used in traditional medicine for generations. These leaves contain naturally occurring compounds that researchers have studied for their potential effects on blood sugar, cholesterol, and metabolic health.

Although mulberry leaves may offer some benefits, it is important to separate scientific evidence from exaggerated health claims. No single leaf can cure diabetes, eliminate high blood pressure, dissolve blood clots, or treat every type of body pain.

1. Mulberry Leaves and Blood Sugar Management

One of the most studied potential benefits of mulberry leaves is their effect on blood glucose.

Mulberry leaves contain a compound called 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), which can inhibit certain enzymes involved in breaking down carbohydrates. This may help reduce the rise in blood sugar after meals.

Some human studies have found that mulberry leaf preparations can modestly reduce post-meal blood glucose. However, the evidence is still limited, and the effects vary depending on the preparation and dose.

Important: Mulberry leaves are not a replacement for diabetes medication, insulin, or a medically recommended diet. Combining concentrated mulberry supplements with diabetes medication may increase the risk of low blood sugar.

2. May Help Support Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Mulberry leaves contain plant compounds, including flavonoids and other polyphenols, that have antioxidant properties.

Researchers have investigated whether mulberry leaf extracts may influence cholesterol and other blood fats. Some preliminary findings are promising, but the available evidence is not strong enough to conclude that drinking mulberry leaf tea reliably lowers cholesterol.

To support healthy cholesterol levels, consider:

  • Eating oats, beans, and other fiber-rich foods.
  • Including nuts and seeds in moderate portions.
  • Choosing olive oil and other unsaturated fats.
  • Eating vegetables and fruits regularly.
  • Limiting trans fats and excessive saturated fat.

If you have high cholesterol, regular medical monitoring and prescribed treatment remain important.

3. Can Mulberry Leaves Lower Blood Pressure?

Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds in mulberry leaves may influence processes involved in blood vessel function.

However, there is insufficient reliable human evidence to recommend mulberry leaves as a treatment for high blood pressure.

If you have hypertension, continue following your prescribed treatment plan. Do not stop medication because you begin drinking herbal tea.

Regular physical activity, limiting excessive sodium, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a balanced diet can help support blood pressure management.
