I placed them on the table.
“You weren’t waiting for my inheritance.”
Julian stared at the folder.
“You were counting on it.”
Nobody moved.
Then I said the sentence I’d been waiting all day to say.
“Julian, the eighteen million dollars is no longer available to you.”
His jaw tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I protected it.”
He stepped closer.
“You can’t do that.”
“I already did.”
Then his young girlfriend walked into the restaurant.
Julian froze.
She looked at him.
Then at me.
Then at the room full of people staring at them.
“Julian,” she whispered.
He looked terrified.
She held up her phone.
“I received the email.”
His face changed.
“What email?”
She looked at me.
“The one telling me the inheritance transfer had been cancelled.”
Silence.
Then she turned toward Julian.
“You told me the money was already yours.”
I slowly picked up my glass.
“Apparently, he told a lot of people that.”
The room erupted into whispers.
Julian’s mother stood up.
“You’ve destroyed this family!”
I looked at her.
“No.”
I placed my hand on the folder.
“Your son did that.”
Then my divorce attorney entered the restaurant.
He walked directly toward Julian and handed him an envelope.
Julian opened it.
His hands began shaking.
I watched him read the first page.
Then the second.
Finally, he looked at me.
“What is this?”
I answered calmly.
“Your divorce papers.”
He stared at me.
Then at the shaved head he had created.
And for the first time that day, he seemed to understand something.
He hadn’t humiliated me.
He had given me the exact moment I needed to stop protecting him.
I turned toward the microphone one final time.
“And Julian?”
He looked up.
“Happy anniversary.”
I smiled.
“Thank you for showing me exactly who you are.”
