How to Stay Cool With Your Air Conditioner Without Driving Up Your Electricity Bill

Running an air conditioner during hot weather can make your home much more comfortable, but leaving it on inefficiently can quickly increase your electricity bill. The good news is that you don’t have to choose between staying cool and saving energy. A few simple changes to the way you use your AC can make a noticeable difference.

One of the easiest ways to reduce air conditioning costs is to choose a reasonable thermostat temperature. Setting the AC extremely low does not necessarily cool your home faster, but it can make the system run longer and consume more electricity. For many households, setting the thermostat around 24–26°C can provide a comfortable balance between cooling and energy efficiency.

Never cover or obstruct the outdoor unit while it is operating unless the manufacturer specifically recommends a particular cover or protection system.

Ceiling fans can also help you stay comfortable without lowering the thermostat dramatically. Fans don’t actually cool the room in the same way an AC does, but they create an airflow effect that can make people feel cooler.

If your ceiling fan has a reversible direction setting, use the manufacturer’s recommended summer setting to circulate air downward. Remember to turn fans off in empty rooms because fans cool people, not the room itself.

Another useful strategy is to reduce sources of indoor heat. Avoid using an oven or stove for long periods during the hottest part of the day when possible. Cooking can add substantial heat to your home and make your AC run longer.

Consider using a microwave, air fryer, or outdoor cooking method when appropriate. Energy-efficient LED lighting can also produce less heat than older incandescent bulbs.

Sealing air leaks is another important part of home energy efficiency. Check doors and windows for noticeable gaps that allow cooled air to escape. Weatherstripping and suitable caulk can help reduce unwanted air leakage.
