Homemade Ginger, Garlic, Onion & Honey Syrup: A Comforting Remedy for Coughs and Sore Throats

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh grated ginger
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 cup honey

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Wash the lemon thoroughly.

Peel and grate the ginger.

Peel and mince the garlic.

Finely chop the onion.

Step 2: Layer Everything

In a clean glass jar, layer:

  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Lemon slices

Repeat until all ingredients are used.

Step 3: Add the Honey

Pour the honey over the ingredients until they are completely covered.

Seal the jar tightly.

Step 4: Let It Infuse

Refrigerate for 12–24 hours.

The honey will become thinner as it mixes with the juices from the onion and lemon.

Step 5: Strain (Optional)

You can strain the syrup or leave the ingredients in the jar and spoon out the liquid as needed.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

How to Use

For adults:

  • Take 1 tablespoon as needed for a sore throat or cough, up to a few times a day.

For children:

  • Do not give honey to infants under 1 year old because of the risk of infant botulism.
  • For older children, consult a healthcare professional if symptoms are severe or persistent.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical care if you have:

  • A cough lasting more than 3 weeks.
  • High fever or difficulty breathing.
  • Chest pain.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Symptoms that continue to worsen.
  • Persistent sinus symptoms lasting more than 10 days or severe facial pain.

Final Thoughts

This homemade honey, ginger, garlic, onion, and lemon syrup can be a comforting traditional remedy for soothing a sore throat or mild cough. However, it is not a cure for cancer, sinus infections, influenza, or other serious illnesses, and it cannot prevent vision loss. Enjoy it as part of a healthy lifestyle, but rely on evidence-based medical care for diagnosing and treating significant health conditions.
