One year later, Summit Core Industries held another annual gala.
The ballroom was filled with executives, investors, employees, and journalists.
At the center of the stage stood Clara.
She wore another red gown.
The same color as the dress she had once been too heartbroken to wear.
The CEO approached her.
“Chairwoman Rowe, would you like to say a few words?”
Clara smiled.
“Of course.”
She moved her wheelchair toward the microphone.
The room became quiet.
“Last year, I entered this ballroom believing I had lost something.”
She paused.
“I thought I had lost my independence.”
A few people listened closely.
“I thought I had lost the woman I used to be.”
She looked around the room.
“But I learned something.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“Sometimes life doesn’t take your strength away.”
“It simply forces you to discover where you were hiding it.”
Applause filled the room.
Clara continued.
“Never allow someone else’s opinion of you to become your opinion of yourself.”
The applause became thunderous.
She smiled.
Then she looked toward the entrance.
For one brief second, she saw Ethan.
He wasn’t an executive.
He wasn’t wearing an expensive tuxedo.
He was simply standing near the back of the room.
He had come quietly.
Not to ask for anything.
Not to interrupt.
Only to see her succeed.
Their eyes met.
Clara gave him a small nod.
Ethan nodded back.
Then he left.
Clara turned back toward the stage.
The spotlight illuminated her red gown.
The same gown Ethan once believed would embarrass him.
