The CEO took the microphone.
“Many of you know Summit Core Industries as an independent corporation.”
Several people nodded.
“But there is something most of you do not know.”
He looked at Clara.
“Mrs. Rowe’s late father was one of the earliest investors in this company.”
Whispers spread through the ballroom.
Ethan’s face went pale.
The CEO continued.
“Following his death, his daughter inherited his controlling interest.”
The room erupted in whispers.
Ethan slowly stood.
“What?”
Clara looked at him.
The CEO continued.
“Mrs. Rowe has remained a silent majority shareholder for years.”
Ethan’s mind raced.
No.
It couldn’t be true.
His wife couldn’t own this company.
He had never seen the documents.
He had never asked.
He had simply assumed the money she gave him belonged to her.
The CEO smiled.
“And tonight, Mrs. Rowe has decided to become publicly involved in the company.”
Clara reached for the microphone.
“Thank you.”
The ballroom became silent.
“I didn’t plan to speak tonight.”
She paused.
“But sometimes people force us to say things we never intended to say.”
Her eyes moved toward Ethan.
“Three years ago, my life changed.”
Everyone knew what she meant.
“After my accident, I lost the ability to walk.”
She took a breath.
“But I did not lose my intelligence.”
She looked around the ballroom.
“I did not lose my ambition.”
A pause.
“And I certainly did not lose my worth.”
Applause began.
Clara continued.
“For a long time, I allowed other people’s discomfort to make me feel ashamed of my own body.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“Tonight, I refuse to do that anymore.”
The applause grew louder.
Clara looked toward the board.
“Effective immediately, I am exercising my authority as the majority shareholder.”
The CEO nodded.
“And the board has unanimously approved the restructuring plan she presented this week.”
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“Mrs. Rowe will become Chairwoman of Summit Core Industries.”
The ballroom exploded with applause.
Ethan stared at Clara.
Chairwoman.
His wife.
The woman he had called a liability.
His employer’s new chairwoman.
Then came the final announcement.
“And the position of Vice President of Operations will not be awarded to Ethan Rowe.”
The room became silent.
Ethan’s face turned red.
The CEO continued.
“Following an internal review, the board has determined that Mr. Rowe violated several company policies involving financial disclosures and conflicts of interest.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Clara remained calm.
“Is it?”
He looked at her.
“You knew?”
“About the investigation?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“You planned this.”
“No.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“You planned your own downfall.”
Part 5 — The Documents
Ethan rushed toward Clara.
“You can’t do this to me.”
Security immediately stepped forward.
Clara raised her hand.
“Let him speak.”
Ethan looked around.
Everyone was watching.
“You’ve humiliated me.”
Clara’s expression didn’t change.
“You humiliated yourself.”
“I built my career.”
“You didn’t build it alone.”
“I worked for everything.”
Clara laughed softly.
“Did you?”
She nodded toward Margaret.
Margaret opened the black folder.
“Mr. Rowe’s MBA tuition was paid from Mrs. Rowe’s personal account.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“That’s irrelevant.”
“His initial investment portfolio was funded by Mrs. Rowe.”
She turned another page.
“His first executive position was secured after Mrs. Rowe personally introduced him to three board members.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Those were gifts.”
“Perhaps.”
Margaret continued.
“But the company has discovered that Mr. Rowe failed to disclose those financial relationships when applying for certain corporate positions.”
The CEO looked at Ethan.
“That’s a serious violation.”
Ethan turned to Clara.
“You said you loved me.”
“I did.”
“You promised we’d always be together.”
“I believed that.”
“Then why are you doing this?”
Clara looked at him for several seconds.
“Because you made a mistake.”
Ethan swallowed.
“What mistake?”
“You confused my disability with weakness.”
The room became completely silent.
Clara continued.
“You thought because I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t leave.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“But tonight you learned something.”
She smiled.
“I can still move forward.”
The applause was deafening.
Vanessa quietly moved away from Ethan.
He noticed.
“Vanessa?”
She didn’t respond.
The woman who had flirted with him all evening suddenly looked embarrassed to have ever been associated with him.
Ethan felt everything slipping away.
His career.
His reputation.
His marriage.
His social standing.
Then the CEO handed Clara a document.
She looked at it.
“Mr. Rowe.”
Ethan looked up.
“You are terminated effective immediately.”
He stared at her.
“You can’t.”
“I can.”
“You’ll regret this.”
Clara smiled sadly.
“No, Ethan.”
“I already regretted marrying you.”
