1. Cook the potatoes
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold, salted water.
Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
2. Brown the ground beef
While the potatoes cook, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart with a spoon until browned.
Drain excess grease if needed.
3. Add the onion and garlic
Add the diced onion to the beef and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
4. Make the gravy
Reduce the heat to medium and add the butter.
Once melted, sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture. Stir continuously for about 1 minute.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
5. Season the gravy
Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and a little salt.
For an even richer flavor, stir in the ketchup or tomato paste.
6. Simmer
Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
Cook for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy becomes thick and silky.
If it gets too thick, add a splash of beef broth.
7. Mash the potatoes
Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly.
Return them to the warm pot and add butter and warm milk.
Mash until creamy and smooth. Stir in sour cream if desired, then season with salt and pepper.
8. Build your plate
Spoon a generous mound of creamy mashed potatoes onto each plate.
Ladle the hot ground beef and gravy generously over the top.
Let that rich gravy run down into the potatoes—that’s the best part! 🤤
