Wash the tomatoes thoroughly and remove the stems.
Dice them into small pieces. If you prefer a less watery salsa, remove some of the seeds and excess juice before chopping.
Place the tomatoes in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Add the Vegetables
Add the finely diced onion, jalapeños, bell pepper if using, and minced garlic.
For a milder salsa, remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeños before chopping.
For more heat, leave some of the seeds in.
Step 3: Add the Fresh Flavor
Stir in the chopped cilantro and fresh lime juice.
Add the salt, black pepper, and optional cumin.
Gently mix everything together until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step 4: Let the Flavors Come Together
Cover the bowl and refrigerate the salsa for at least 30 minutes.
For even better flavor, let it rest for 1–2 hours. The tomatoes release their juices while the onion, garlic, jalapeño, and cilantro blend together.
Step 5: Taste and Adjust
Give the salsa a taste before serving.
Add a little more salt, lime juice, or jalapeño according to your preference.
If it becomes too spicy, adding more diced tomatoes can help balance the heat.
Step 6: Serve
Serve this homemade salsa cold or at room temperature with tortilla chips.
It’s also delicious spooned over tacos, grilled chicken, eggs, burritos, nachos, or simply served alongside a family dinner.
Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator and use within a few days.
There’s something special about recipes like this. They aren’t complicated or fancy—they’re the recipes that get made again and again because everyone remembers the taste.
Grandma made it. Mom made it. I made it. Now my daughter is carrying on the tradition. That’s a family favorite worth keeping. ❤️🌶️🍅
