Every Night at 8 P.M., My Daughter-in-Law Locked Herself in the Bathroom—Until I Heard a Man’s Voice and Called 911

Part 1: The Strange Routine

My name is Margaret Wilson, and I am sixty-eight years old. For most of my life, I believed that a peaceful home was one of the greatest blessings a person could have.

I raised my only son, Michael, after his father died when he was still a teenager. I worked long hours, sacrificed vacations, and put aside my own dreams so that Michael could have a comfortable life.

When he married Jessica, a beautiful, well-spoken woman who seemed to adore him, I was genuinely happy for him.

I welcomed her into my home without hesitation.

After their wedding, Michael convinced me that living together would be practical. He had recently accepted a position that required frequent travel, and Jessica said she didn’t like being alone in their apartment while he was away.

I agreed to let them stay with me temporarily.

That temporary arrangement eventually became permanent.

For the first few months, everything seemed fine. Jessica helped with dinner, asked about my health, and occasionally brought me flowers. She called me Mom, and I began to think of her as the daughter I had never had.

Then her behavior changed.

It began with something so small that I almost dismissed it.

Every evening, precisely at eight o’clock, Jessica would announce that she needed to take a shower.

She would gather a small bag, enter the bathroom at the end of the hallway, lock the door, and remain inside for more than an hour.

At first, I thought nothing of it.

Perhaps she enjoyed long showers. Perhaps she liked having time to herself after a busy day.

But after several weeks, I noticed something strange.

The water would run for a few minutes, stop, and then remain silent for long stretches.

Sometimes, I heard quiet tapping sounds.

Other nights, I heard what sounded like someone moving a chair across the tiled floor.

And occasionally, a strong fragrance drifted into the hallway.

It wasn’t Jessica’s usual perfume.

It smelled like expensive men’s cologne.

I tried to convince myself that there was a reasonable explanation.

Perhaps she was using Michael’s products.

Perhaps I was simply becoming suspicious because I spent too much time alone.

But then Michael left on a seven-day business trip.

And Jessica’s behavior became even stranger.

On the first evening of his absence, I was sitting in the living room watching television when I heard her footsteps approaching the bathroom.

I glanced at the clock.

Exactly eight o’clock.

She entered, locked the door, and turned on the water.

I shook my head and returned to my program.

Twenty minutes later, I realized something was missing.

Jessica had left her handbag beside the sofa.

Curiosity overcame me, and I walked over to move it away from the edge of the table.

As I lifted it, a small package slipped out and landed on the carpet.

I bent down to pick it up.

It was a packet of peppermint-scented wipes marketed specifically for men.

I stared at it for several seconds.

Why would my daughter-in-law carry something like that into the bathroom every night?

I returned the package to her bag exactly as I had found it.

Then I went back to my chair, but I couldn’t concentrate on the television anymore.

A terrible possibility had entered my mind.

Was Jessica meeting someone while my son was away?

And if she was, how could a stranger possibly be entering my house without my knowledge?

I decided I would not accuse her without evidence.

Instead, I would observe.

And what I discovered over the next two nights would change everything I believed about my family.

Part 2: The Camera That Went Black

The following morning, I checked the security cameras around the house.

Michael had installed them several years earlier after someone attempted to break into our garage.

There were cameras at the front entrance, in the driveway, near the back door, and in the hallway outside the bedrooms.

I knew how to use the system well enough to review recordings.

I began with the previous evening.

At 7:58 p.m., Jessica appeared on the hallway camera.

She was carrying her small bag.

At 8:01 p.m., she entered the bathroom.

Nothing unusual.

I continued watching.

At 8:19 p.m., the hallway camera suddenly went black.

I frowned and checked the recording time.

The signal had disappeared without warning.

Forty minutes later, the image returned.

The hallway was empty.

A few minutes afterward, Jessica emerged from the bathroom, dressed in different clothes.

She glanced toward the staircase before walking into the kitchen.

I replayed the recording.

Then I replayed it again.

The camera had worked perfectly all day. It had stopped recording only after Jessica entered the bathroom.

I checked the previous evenings.

The same thing had happened repeatedly.

Every night at eight, the camera lost its signal for approximately forty minutes.

My hands began to tremble.

I wasn’t a technical expert, but I knew that ordinary equipment problems didn’t usually follow such a precise schedule.

Someone might have been deliberately interfering with the camera.

But why?

I decided to test one more thing.

That afternoon, I placed my phone on a shelf in the living room and opened the home’s camera application. I wanted to see whether I could observe the hallway while Jessica was inside the bathroom.

I didn’t tell her what I was doing.

At 7:55 p.m., she came downstairs wearing a pale blue robe.

“Mom, I’m going to take my shower,” she announced.

“All right, sweetheart.”

She smiled and disappeared down the hallway.

I watched the screen.

For several minutes, everything remained normal.

Then the image flickered.

The screen turned black.

I waited.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

I checked the internet connection and restarted the application.

Nothing changed.

I was about to give up when I heard something from the hallway.

A man’s voice.

Low, calm, and completely unfamiliar.

“Yeah, hold on a little bit. I’m about to head out.”

My entire body went rigid.

I slowly lowered my phone.

There was no man in the living room.

I had checked the front door less than an hour earlier, and no one had entered the house.

Jessica was supposed to be alone in the bathroom.

So who was speaking?

I stood up and moved toward the hallway.

My heart pounded so hard that I could hear it in my ears.

As I approached the bathroom, the voice became clearer.

“Just give me another minute.”

I stopped a few feet from the door.

Then I heard Jessica laugh softly.

It wasn’t the polite laugh she used around me.

It was intimate and familiar, as though she were speaking to someone she had known for years.

I felt sick.

I reached for the doorknob, but before I could touch it, I heard footsteps inside.

Someone was moving toward the door.

I stepped backward.

A moment later, the footsteps stopped.

The bathroom fell silent.

Then a man’s voice whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Is the old woman still upstairs?”

I covered my mouth.

He wasn’t merely visiting my house.

He was talking about me.

And he believed I couldn’t hear him.

I didn’t knock.

I didn’t shout.

Instead, I returned to the living room as quietly as I could, grabbed my phone, and dialed 911.

“Emergency services. What is your emergency?”

I struggled to speak.

“My name is Margaret Wilson. I’m at home, and I believe there’s a man inside my house who shouldn’t be here.”

“Ma’am, can you see the individual?”

“No. He’s inside the bathroom with my daughter-in-law.”

“Is your daughter-in-law in danger?”

“I don’t know,” I whispered. “But I heard him asking whether I was upstairs. I’m afraid he knows I’m here.”

The dispatcher instructed me to move somewhere safe and remain on the line.

I retreated into the kitchen, locked the door behind me, and waited.

Then I heard something that made my knees nearly buckle.

The bathroom door opened.

Footsteps crossed the hallway.

And a man’s voice called out:

“Margaret? Are you home?”

I held my breath.

He knew my name.
