Clove tea is a simple herbal drink made from whole cloves and hot water. Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree and contain aromatic compounds, including eugenol, that give them their distinctive flavor and fragrance.
Clove tea is often promoted online as a remedy for headaches, poor circulation, digestive problems, inflammation, weight gain, and fatigue. While cloves contain interesting plant compounds and can be part of a balanced diet, there is not enough evidence to say that clove tea can “cleanse the lungs,” burn body fat, or cure chronic digestive problems.
Still, a warm cup can be an enjoyable addition to your daily routine.
Simple Clove Tea Recipe
Ingredients
- 4–5 whole cloves
- 1½ cups water
- 1 small cinnamon stick, optional
- 2–3 slices fresh ginger, optional
- 1 teaspoon honey, optional
- A squeeze of lemon, optional
Step 1: Boil the water
Pour about 1½ cups of water into a small saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil.
Step 2: Add the cloves
Add 4–5 whole cloves to the water.
If you like a warmer, spicier flavor, add a small cinnamon stick or a couple of thin slices of fresh ginger.
Step 3: Simmer gently
Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for approximately 5–10 minutes.
This gives the water time to absorb the cloves’ aroma and flavor.
Step 4: Remove from the heat
Turn off the heat and allow the tea to cool slightly.
Step 5: Strain
Pour the tea through a small strainer to remove the cloves and other spices.
Step 6: Add flavor
You can add a teaspoon of honey or a small squeeze of lemon if desired.
Step 7: Enjoy
Drink the tea warm. It can be enjoyed after a meal or as a comforting evening beverage.
