Cataracts and Cloudy Vision After 60: What You Should Know

Cloudy or blurry vision becomes more common with age, and cataracts are one of the most frequent causes. A cataract develops when the normally clear lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, making it harder for light to pass through and form a sharp image.

The changes are usually gradual. At first, a person may simply notice that vision is not as crisp as it used to be. Over time, colors may appear less vivid, reading may become more difficult, and nighttime driving can become increasingly uncomfortable.

Common symptoms of cataracts include blurry or cloudy vision, increased sensitivity to bright lights, halos around headlights, difficulty seeing at night, faded colors, and frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions.

Social-media posts sometimes claim that a common kitchen ingredient can “flush the film” from a cloudy lens in just eight minutes. This claim is misleading. An established cataract is a physical change in the eye’s lens, and there is no proven kitchen ingredient, drink, or homemade remedy that can remove it within minutes.

It is especially important not to place homemade mixtures, onion preparations, oils, juices, salt solutions, or other household substances directly into the eyes. The surface of the eye is delicate, and inappropriate substances can cause irritation, chemical injury, infection, or damage to the cornea.

A healthy diet can certainly support overall eye health. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, nuts, and other nutrient-rich foods provide vitamins and minerals needed for normal body function. However, good nutrition should not be confused with a treatment capable of reversing an established cataract.

If cloudy vision is becoming noticeable, an eye examination can determine whether cataracts are responsible. Other conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, corneal disorders, and certain medications, can also affect vision.
