Dialysis performs some of the functions that failing kidneys can no longer perform adequately. Depending on the individual’s situation, dialysis helps remove waste products and excess fluid and helps manage electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.
A homemade beverage cannot reliably perform these functions.
Someone receiving dialysis should never stop or postpone dialysis because a social-media recipe appears to improve symptoms. Any change to a dialysis schedule must come from the treating kidney specialist.
What About “Kidneys Coming Back in 8 Hours”?
Kidney function can sometimes improve when the underlying problem is acute kidney injury, particularly when the cause is identified and treated promptly.
But that is very different from claiming that a drink repairs failing kidneys in eight hours.
Chronic kidney disease and kidney failure generally require ongoing monitoring and treatment. Whether kidney function can recover depends on the underlying cause and the extent and duration of kidney damage.
Foods and Drinks Need to Be Individualized
There is no universal “kidney detox” drink.
For people with kidney disease, some foods that are healthy for the general population may need to be limited depending on laboratory results and the stage of kidney disease. Potassium, phosphorus, sodium, protein, and fluid intake may all need individual consideration.
A renal dietitian or nephrologist can provide a plan based on the person’s actual blood tests and treatment.
Warning Signs That Need Medical Attention
Someone with serious kidney disease should seek urgent medical attention for symptoms such as:
- Severe shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Confusion or extreme drowsiness
- Very little or no urine
- Severe swelling
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe weakness
- Significant changes in consciousness
These symptoms should not be treated with a homemade drink.
The Bottom Line
A refreshing drink such as lemon water can be part of a normal diet for someone who has no fluid restrictions, but it cannot restore failing kidneys in eight hours or replace dialysis.
If someone is on dialysis, the safest approach is to continue the prescribed treatment and speak with their nephrologist before making changes. Kidney health is managed through proper diagnosis, medication when appropriate, nutrition, fluid management, and—when necessary—dialysis or kidney transplantation.
