Before My Son Passed Away, He Donated His Heart to an 18 Year Old Girl

I touched my chest.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

And suddenly I imagined Ethan.

Not as he had looked in his hospital bed.

But as he had been before.

Running through the house.

Laughing.

Complaining that there was nothing to eat.

Calling me “Mom” from the other room.

Then Rebecca whispered:

“He left you something else.”

She pointed to the envelope.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

I recognized Ethan’s handwriting immediately.

Mom,

If you’re reading this, then you know where my heart went.

I had to stop.

The words blurred through my tears.

I continued.

Please don’t think of it as something they took from me. Think of it as something I gave.

You spent your whole life trying to save mine.

Let me spend whatever time I have left saving someone else’s.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

There’s one thing I never told you about our family.

My breathing stopped.

I found an old medical record while researching my condition.

It was about Uncle Michael.

My childhood memories came rushing back.

My little brother.

The hospital.

My mother’s silence.

Ethan had continued writing.

The record says his diagnosis was connected to a genetic condition.

And Mom, there’s something strange about the date.

I stared at the page.

Then I read the final sentence.

“Uncle Michael may not have died from the disease everyone told us about.”

I looked up at Rebecca.

She was watching me carefully.

“Did Ethan ever tell you about this?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

I looked back at the letter.

My brother had died when I was nine.

For decades, I had believed I knew what happened.

But Ethan had apparently discovered something before he died.

Something about our family.

Something my mother had never told me.

And at the bottom of the page, beneath Ethan’s signature, he had written one final line:

“Mom, before you trust anyone with the truth about our family, find Dr. Samuel Hayes.”

I knew that name.

And the moment I saw it, I realized why.

He had been the doctor who treated my brother thirty years earlier.

The doctor who had told my mother that Michael’s death was unavoidable.

The doctor who had disappeared from our lives immediately afterward.

And according to the letter…

he was still alive.
