Baking Soda for Dark Spots and Wrinkles: What You Should Know Before Putting It on Your Face

Baking soda is a common kitchen ingredient, and many homemade beauty recipes claim that it can remove dark spots, wrinkles, and under-eye circles. While it may seem like an inexpensive skincare solution, baking soda is not necessarily gentle enough for facial skin.

Baking soda is alkaline, while healthy skin has a naturally acidic surface known as the skin barrier. Applying baking soda directly to the face can disrupt that barrier, potentially causing dryness, irritation, redness, burning, or increased sensitivity.

If you’re looking for a simple way to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone, try a gentler routine instead.

1. Start With Gentle Cleansing

Wash your face with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, especially around dark spots or delicate areas under the eyes.

2. Use Vitamin C for Uneven Tone

A properly formulated vitamin C serum can help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation over time. Start with a lower-strength product if your skin is sensitive and apply it according to the product directions.

3. Consider Niacinamide

Niacinamide is another well-established skincare ingredient that can help improve the appearance of uneven skin tone while supporting the skin barrier. It is generally gentler than homemade abrasive treatments.

4. Never Skip Sunscreen

Sun exposure can make dark spots more noticeable and contribute to premature skin aging. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning and reapply when appropriate.

This is one of the most important steps if you’re trying to prevent existing pigmentation from becoming darker.

5. Be Careful Around the Eyes

Dark circles can have many causes, including genetics, pigmentation, allergies, visible blood vessels, shadows from facial structure, and lack of sleep. Baking soda should not be applied close to the eyes because irritation in this area can be particularly uncomfortable.

6. Don’t Expect an Overnight Transformation

Wrinkles and pigmentation usually develop gradually, so safe skincare generally requires consistent use over weeks or months. A homemade mixture that promises to erase decades of wrinkles or dark spots in a few minutes should be treated with caution.

A Safer Rule for Homemade Skincare

If a recipe contains baking soda, lemon juice, toothpaste, or other harsh household ingredients and recommends applying them directly to your face, it’s better to think twice.

Baking soda may be useful around the house, but that doesn’t make it a good facial treatment. For dark spots and signs of aging, gentle skincare, daily sun protection, and proven cosmetic ingredients are much safer choices.
