Baking soda is often promoted on social media as a simple solution for dark spots, wrinkles, acne scars, and dark circles. However, there is no scientific evidence that baking soda can safely remove these skin concerns, and using it regularly on your face may actually do more harm than good.
Important: Baking soda has a high alkaline pH (around 8–9), while healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic (around pH 4.5–5.5). Frequent use can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, redness, and increased sensitivity.
Can Baking Soda Remove Dark Spots?
No. Baking soda does not fade pigmentation or age spots.
Dark spots usually result from:
- Sun damage
- Acne healing (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
- Hormonal changes
- Aging
These conditions respond better to proven skincare ingredients rather than baking soda.
Can It Remove Wrinkles?
No.
Wrinkles are caused by:
- Loss of collagen
- Sun exposure
- Natural aging
- Repeated facial movements
Baking soda cannot rebuild collagen or tighten the skin permanently.
Can It Remove Dark Circles?
No.
Dark circles can be caused by:
- Genetics
- Thin skin
- Allergies
- Lack of sleep
- Aging
- Blood vessels beneath the eyes
Applying baking soda near the eyes may cause irritation and should be avoided.
