That afternoon, Paige came out of the hospital.
I was waiting across the street.
She stopped when she saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at my wedding ring.
“You’re Jacqueline.”
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted this.”
I almost laughed.
“You never wanted what? My husband? His child? The apartment? The money?”
She lowered her head.
“I didn’t know you existed.”
That stopped me.
“What?”
“I knew he was married.”
My jaw tightened.
“But he told me you were separated.”
“He told you that?”
“Yes.”
She wiped her eyes.
“He said you were staying together for financial reasons. He said the divorce was already being prepared.”
I stared at her.
“You believed him?”
“I was twenty-four and pregnant.”
Her voice broke.
“He told me everything would be different once the investment deal closed.”
“What investment deal?”
She looked frightened.
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
She pulled her phone from her purse.
“There were documents in his apartment. I found them two nights before the accident.”
She showed me photographs.
I recognized the company immediately.
It was one of Alistair’s businesses.
But there was something strange about the documents.
Several companies had transferred money into it.
Millions of dollars.
And then the money disappeared.
I looked at Paige.
“Did you know what he was doing?”
She shook her head.
“I thought he was wealthy.”
“He is.”
“No,” she whispered.
“He was.”
PART 4 — THE REAL PLAN
That night, Gavin arrived at my office with a folder.
He placed it on my desk.
“We traced the transfers.”
I opened it.
For months, money had been moving through a chain of companies.
Alistair wasn’t simply having an affair.
He was moving company assets.
He had created shell companies and transferred money between them.
Then he had used marital assets as collateral.
And my name was attached to several guarantees.
If the investment deal failed, creditors could come after me.
The house.
Our savings.
My investments.
Everything.
I looked at Gavin.
“How long has he been doing this?”
“About two years.”
Two years.
That was when Paige had entered his life.
But there was one more name appearing repeatedly in the documents.
George Finch.
Alistair’s father.
My father-in-law.
I leaned back.
Suddenly, his behavior at the hospital made sense.
The panic.
The silence.
The way Martha had protected Paige.
They all knew.
PART 5 — THE CONFRONTATION
The next morning, I went back to the hospital.
Alistair was awake.
His parents were sitting beside him.
When I entered, Martha immediately stood.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
I smiled.
“I’m his wife.”
Nobody answered.
I placed a folder on the bed.
Alistair looked at it.
His face changed.
“What is that?”
“Your future.”
He swallowed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
I opened the folder.
“Three shell companies. Nearly a million dollars transferred to Paige. A secret apartment. A forged personal guarantee. And a three-year-old child.”
Martha gasped.
George looked away.
Alistair closed his eyes.
Then he whispered:
“Jacqueline…”
“No.”
I raised my hand.
“For seven years, I defended you.”
I pulled out my phone.
“I defended your business.”
I placed the recording on the table.
His own voice filled the room.
“Jacqueline will never find out.”
Silence.
Paige’s name.
The investment.
The guarantees.
Everything.
When the recording ended, Alistair stared at the ceiling.
“You weren’t supposed to hear that.”
I looked at him.
“That is the first honest thing you’ve said.”
