At 2 A.M., the Billionaire Pretended to Sleep to Test His Maid—But What She Did Left Him Speechless

  • by

The following morning, Adrian woke earlier than usual.

He hadn’t slept much after Ana left his room.

He kept remembering the way she had looked at him—not with fear of losing her job, but with genuine concern.

At seven o’clock, he called for breakfast and asked the housekeeper to send Ana to his study.

When she arrived, she stood near the door with her hands clasped in front of her.

“Good morning, sir.”

“Good morning. Please sit down.”

Ana looked startled.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

She sat on the edge of the chair, clearly uncomfortable.

Adrian picked up the folded paper she had left the previous night.

“I want to apologize.”

Ana raised her eyes.

“For what, sir?”

“For making assumptions about you.”

He paused.

“I’ve spent so long expecting people to disappoint me that I’ve forgotten how to recognize genuine kindness.”

Ana didn’t know what to say.

Adrian continued.

“You didn’t take the money. You didn’t even look at it. Instead, you were worried about my health.”

He pushed the paper gently toward her.

“Thank you.”

Ana’s expression softened.

“You’re welcome, sir.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrian noticed the name written at the bottom of the page.

Dr. Elena Morales.

His mother’s name.

He felt his stomach tighten.

“Why did you write my mother’s name?”

Ana immediately looked down at the paper.

“I didn’t know she was your mother until I saw a photograph in the hallway.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“How do you know Dr. Elena Morales?”

Ana’s fingers tightened around one another.

“My mother worked at a hospital in Manila many years ago. She told me about a doctor who helped her when she was very sick.”

Adrian felt a strange chill.

“My mother was a physician in Manila before she retired.”

Ana nodded slowly.

“Yes, sir. My mother always said Dr. Elena was the kindest person she had ever met.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What was your mother’s name?”

“Isabella Santos.”

The name meant nothing to him.

Yet something about the situation felt strangely familiar.

He remembered his mother telling him stories about patients she had helped, especially young women who couldn’t afford treatment.

But he had been a teenager then, more interested in school and friends than in the details of her medical work.

“Did my mother treat your mother?”

“Yes, sir. She helped her after she developed a serious infection following childbirth.”

Adrian fell silent.

“Your mother gave birth to you?”

Ana nodded.

“She always told me that without Dr. Elena’s help, she might not have survived.”

Adrian leaned back in his chair.

He had never imagined that a connection to his mother might exist between him and his housemaid.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this when you applied for the job?”

Ana shook her head.

“I didn’t know you were her son. I only recognized your family name after I started working here.”

“Why didn’t you mention it then?”

“Because I didn’t want you to hire me out of gratitude. I wanted to earn my place here.”

Adrian studied her face.

For once, he believed someone without needing proof.

Still, one question remained.

“Is your mother alive?”

Ana’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, sir. But she’s very sick.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What happened?”

“She has a serious heart condition. She needs further treatment, but I can’t afford everything.”

He looked at her carefully.

“Is that why you came to work here?”

“Partly. I need the salary to help pay for her care.”

“How much do you need?”

Ana shook her head quickly.

“Sir, I didn’t tell you this to ask for money.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want you to think I told you about your mother because I wanted something.”

Adrian looked at the woman who had spent months working quietly in his mansion.

He thought about the $100,000 he had placed in front of her.

Then he thought about the enormous sums he spent without hesitation on watches, cars, and unnecessary luxuries.

“How much does her treatment cost?” he asked again.

Ana hesitated before answering.

“The hospital has given us an estimate. I don’t know whether all the procedures will be necessary, but the amount is more than my family can manage.”

“Give me the estimate.”

“Sir—”

“Please, Ana. Let me read it.”

She eventually agreed.

That afternoon, Adrian reviewed the documents with his financial adviser and contacted a reputable medical specialist.

He made it clear that Ana’s mother would receive an independent medical assessment and that any assistance would be handled transparently.

He did not want Ana to feel indebted to him.

Most importantly, he wanted her mother to receive appropriate care.

Two days later, Ana received a call from the hospital.

A specialist had reviewed her mother’s records and arranged an appointment to discuss possible treatment options.

The hospital’s financial office had also confirmed that a charitable medical fund could cover part of the costs.

Ana was overwhelmed.

When she told Adrian, she began crying before she could finish her sentence.

“I don’t know how to thank you.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“But you didn’t have to do this.”

“No,” he admitted. “I didn’t.”

He looked toward the window.

“But your mother once helped mine—or, at the very least, helped someone my mother cared deeply about. And even if she hadn’t, helping someone in need shouldn’t require a personal connection.”

Ana wiped her tears.

For the first time since arriving at the mansion, she smiled without looking worried.

Adrian found himself smiling back.

Neither of them realized that someone else had been watching the exchange from the hallway.

Marcus.

And he was not pleased.

Part 3: The Friend Who Wanted Her Gone

Marcus had been Adrian’s friend since university.

He had also introduced Adrian to Vanessa.

For years, Marcus had benefited from Adrian’s generosity. Adrian had helped him establish a business, introduced him to influential clients, and lent him money during difficult periods.

But Marcus had developed an unhealthy interest in Adrian’s finances.

He frequently suggested investments that benefited his own companies. Whenever Adrian questioned his advice, Marcus accused him of being ungrateful.

Now, watching Adrian show unusual concern for Ana, Marcus became suspicious.

Later that evening, he confronted Adrian in the study.

“So, you’re paying for your maid’s mother’s medical treatment now?”

Adrian looked up from his laptop.

“I’m helping someone who needs it.”

Marcus laughed.

“Of course you are. And I’m sure she has absolutely no idea how to take advantage of that.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Enough.”

“I’m trying to protect you.”

“No. You’re insulting someone who has done nothing wrong.”

Marcus raised his hands.

“Fine. But don’t come crying to me when this ends badly.”

He left the study in a huff.

Adrian returned to his work, but Marcus’s words reminded him of the person he had once been.

He had always believed that wealth gave him the ability to solve every problem.

Now he was beginning to understand that money could also distort relationships, turning kindness into suspicion and generosity into an expectation of control.

Over the next several weeks, Adrian and Ana developed a quiet friendship.

They talked occasionally during breakfast or while he worked late in the living room.

Ana never asked about his fortune.

Instead, she asked whether he had eaten, whether he was sleeping better, and whether he had spoken to his sister recently.

Those ordinary questions affected him more than expensive gifts ever had.

For years, Adrian had surrounded himself with people who praised his achievements.

Ana was the first person in a long time who seemed interested in how he was actually doing.

Meanwhile, her mother’s health remained uncertain.

After further examinations, doctors recommended a treatment plan and explained its risks, benefits, and alternatives.

Ana accompanied her mother to appointments whenever her work schedule allowed.

Adrian arranged for her to have reasonable time off and continued helping through the medical fund.

He never made her promise anything in return.

One afternoon, Ana returned from the hospital with unexpected news.

Her mother had improved enough to return home temporarily while awaiting the next stage of treatment.

Ana was relieved.

She went to Adrian’s study to tell him.

“Sir, the doctor says she’s responding well to the treatment.”

Adrian stood up.

“That’s wonderful news.”

Ana smiled through her tears.

“I thought I was going to lose her.”

For a moment, Adrian didn’t know what to say.

Then he offered her a clean handkerchief.

Ana laughed softly as she accepted it.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

The silence that followed felt comfortable rather than awkward.

Then Ana said something he would remember for years.

“You know, sir, I think your mother would be happy to see you helping someone the way she used to help people.”

Adrian looked away.

“I hope so.”

That night, he slept without waking.

But the peace did not last.

The next morning, his company’s chief financial officer called with alarming news.

Several major transfers had been made from one of Adrian’s business accounts.

The transactions had been authorized using credentials associated with a senior executive.

The money had been moved through several companies before disappearing into an overseas account.

Adrian immediately ordered an internal investigation.

By noon, the situation had become much worse.

The transactions were connected to a business Marcus had recommended months earlier.

And the documents contained signatures that appeared to implicate Adrian himself.

For the first time in years, Adrian felt the ground shifting beneath his feet.

His business empire was under threat.

His reputation could be destroyed.

And someone he trusted had apparently been working against him.

That evening, Marcus arrived at the mansion.

He looked unusually calm.

“I heard about the missing money,” he said.

Adrian stared at him.

“How did you hear about it so quickly?”

Marcus shrugged.

“People talk.”

Adrian said nothing.

Then Marcus glanced toward the doorway, where Ana was passing with a tray.

His expression changed.

“Perhaps you should start investigating the people closest to you.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What exactly are you suggesting?”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Think about it. A young woman arrives at your mansion. Suddenly, you’re paying her mother’s medical bills, trusting her with private information, and changing the way you run your household.”

Adrian stood slowly.

“Get out.”

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You’re making a serious mistake, Adrian.”

“Perhaps. But it won’t be your decision to make.”

Marcus left.

Adrian watched him disappear through the front door.

Then he noticed Ana standing at the end of the hallway.

She had heard enough to understand that Marcus was accusing her of something.

For a moment, their eyes met.

“Sir,” she said quietly, “if you ever think I’m doing something wrong, please ask me directly. I won’t lie to you.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I believe you, Ana.”

He meant it.

But the following morning, an envelope arrived at the mansion.

Inside was a collection of photographs and financial documents.

The photographs showed Ana entering a building associated with one of the companies under investigation.

The documents suggested that she had received money from an account connected to the missing funds.

Adrian stared at the pages.

He knew appearances could be deceiving.

He also knew that the evidence might be genuine.

For the first time since meeting Ana, he didn’t know what to believe.

And when she entered the room and saw the documents spread across his desk, her face went pale.

“Sir,” she whispered, “I can explain.”

Adrian looked up.

“Then please do.”

Ana took a trembling breath.

“The man in those photographs is someone I’ve been trying to find for years.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Who is he?”

Ana looked directly into his eyes.

“He’s the man who destroyed my father’s life.”

And suddenly, the mystery surrounding Ana Santos became far more complicated than Adrian had ever imagined.
