Social media posts often claim that a single natural remedy can “wipe out” parasites, urinary tract infections (UTIs), herpes, viruses, bacteria, arthritis, sciatica, and Candida. While many herbs and spices contain compounds with antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, there is no natural remedy proven to safely cure all of these very different conditions.
Here’s what the evidence shows.
Garlic
Garlic contains allicin, a sulfur compound with antibacterial and antifungal activity in laboratory studies.
Potential Benefits
- May support heart health.
- May have mild antimicrobial effects.
- Contains antioxidants.
- Can be part of a healthy diet.
However: Garlic has not been proven to cure UTIs, herpes, parasites, or viral infections.
Ginger
Ginger has long been used to help relieve:
- Mild nausea
- Indigestion
- Some types of inflammation
Its anti-inflammatory compounds may help reduce minor aches, but it does not eliminate infections or parasites.
Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Research suggests curcumin may help support joint comfort in some people with osteoarthritis, but it is not a replacement for medical treatment of arthritis or nerve pain such as sciatica.
Cranberries
Cranberry products may help reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs in some people, particularly women who experience frequent infections.
However, cranberry juice or supplements do not reliably treat an active UTI. If you have symptoms such as burning during urination, fever, or back pain, you should seek medical care.
Yogurt and Fermented Foods
Foods containing live cultures, such as yogurt and kefir, can support a healthy balance of gut bacteria.
They may help restore the gut microbiome after antibiotics, but they do not cure Candida overgrowth or systemic fungal infections.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are rich in:
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Healthy fats
- Plant protein
Although they are traditionally used in some cultures for intestinal health, there is insufficient evidence that eating pumpkin seeds alone can eliminate parasitic infections.
