If your oven is covered in burnt-on grease, baked-on food, and stubborn stains, you don’t always need an expensive oven cleaner. A dishwasher tablet can be used as part of a simple cleaning method that helps loosen hardened grease and makes the oven much easier to clean.
The key is to use the tablet carefully and avoid damaging the oven’s heating elements, seals, or interior surfaces.
Start by removing the oven racks, trays, and other removable accessories. Place them aside so you can clean them separately.
Make sure the oven is completely switched off and has cooled down before you begin. Never work inside a hot oven while handling water or cleaning products.
Fill a heat-resistant bowl or baking dish with hot water. Add one dishwasher tablet to the water and allow it to dissolve. You can gently stir the mixture with a utensil rather than touching the tablet directly.
Once dissolved, carefully place the bowl inside the oven.
Heat the oven at a low temperature for approximately 15–20 minutes, just enough to create gentle steam. The warm moisture can help soften dried grease and food residue.
Turn the oven off and allow it to cool until it is safe to work inside.
Put on household cleaning gloves and remove the bowl carefully. Using a damp microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge, begin wiping the softened grease from the oven walls.
Work from the top downward so loosened residue doesn’t fall onto areas you’ve already cleaned.
For particularly stubborn burnt-on deposits, place a damp cloth over the area for several minutes to soften it further before wiping. A plastic scraper designed for oven surfaces can also help with stubborn residue, but avoid sharp metal tools that could scratch the interior.
The oven door often requires extra attention. Grease can accumulate on the inside of the glass, particularly around the lower edge. Use a damp cloth to loosen the residue and wipe it away gradually.
Do not pour large quantities of water directly into the oven. Excess liquid can reach electrical components, heating elements, or areas that are not designed to become wet.
The oven racks can be cleaned separately. Place them in a large basin or bathtub lined with an old towel, cover them with hot water, and add an appropriate amount of dishwasher detergent. Allow them to soak before scrubbing away the softened residue.
After cleaning, rinse surfaces thoroughly with a clean damp cloth to remove detergent residue. Follow with a dry cloth and leave the oven door open for a while so the interior can dry completely.
It is important to remember that dishwasher tablets are formulated for dishwashers, not specifically for ovens. Some oven manufacturers recommend against using dishwasher detergent on particular interior surfaces because strong detergents may damage coatings or finishes. Always check your oven manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before using this method.
Never mix a dishwasher tablet solution with bleach, ammonia, commercial oven cleaner, or other cleaning chemicals. Combining household cleaning products can produce dangerous fumes.
Avoid applying detergent directly to heating elements, fans, electrical components, door seals, or ventilation openings. If your oven has a special self-cleaning or catalytic lining, use only the cleaning method recommended by the manufacturer.
For everyday kitchen cleaning, prevention makes a huge difference. Wipe spills as soon as the oven has cooled, use suitable baking trays to catch drips, and clean accumulated grease before it becomes heavily baked onto the surface.
A heavily soiled oven may require several cleaning passes rather than one. The combination of warmth, moisture, soaking, and gentle scrubbing can make stubborn grease significantly easier to remove without aggressive scraping.
With regular oven maintenance, you can keep your appliance cleaner, reduce unpleasant burnt-food odors, and avoid allowing layers of grease to accumulate over time.
The dishwasher-tablet method can be a convenient cleaning trick, but it should always be used cautiously and according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your particular oven. The goal is not simply to remove every stain as quickly as possible—it is to get a clean oven without damaging the appliance or exposing yourself to unnecessary cleaning chemicals.
