After Having Four Daughters, My Husband Finally Got the Son He Wanted—But One Look at Our Baby Made Him Say Something That Changed Our Family Forever

  • by

Brandon and I had been married for eight years when our fifth child was born. Throughout our marriage, he had dreamed of having a son. He loved our four daughters, but deep down, I knew he believed our family would never be complete until we had a boy.

When we discovered I was pregnant for the fifth time, Brandon was convinced that his dream would finally come true.

“This is it,” he told me one evening, resting his hand on my growing belly. “I know we’re having a boy this time.”

I smiled, although a part of me was exhausted. Four pregnancies had taken a tremendous toll on my body, and I wasn’t sure I had the strength to go through another one. But Brandon seemed happier than I’d seen him in years.

When the doctor finally announced that we’d welcomed a healthy baby boy, Brandon nearly burst into tears.

“A son,” he whispered. “We finally have a son.”

Our four daughters were waiting eagerly to meet their baby brother. The oldest had already chosen a nickname for him, while the youngest kept asking when she could hold him.

For a few beautiful moments, everything seemed perfect.

Then the nurse placed our newborn in Brandon’s arms.

He looked down at the baby’s face, smiling at first. But slowly, his smile disappeared. His eyebrows drew together, and he began examining the baby’s features with an expression I couldn’t understand.

“Brandon?” I asked weakly from the hospital bed. “What’s wrong?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the baby again, then turned toward me.

“Why does he look like that?”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“What do you mean?”

He swallowed hard, his face growing pale.

“This baby doesn’t look anything like me.”

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Brandon, he’s a newborn,” I replied. “Babies change as they grow. What are you talking about?”

But he wasn’t listening.

He looked at the nurse, then back at me.

“I want a DNA test.”

For a moment, I thought the exhaustion of the delivery had made me misunderstand him.

“Excuse me?”

“A paternity test,” he repeated. “I want to know if this is actually my son.”

I felt as though someone had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart.

I’d carried this child for nine months. I’d endured the pain, the sleepless nights, and the frightening hours of labor. And now, instead of celebrating the birth of our son, my husband was accusing me of betraying him.

“Are you seriously accusing me of cheating on you?” I whispered.

Brandon looked away.

“I just want the truth.”

Tears filled my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.

“Fine,” I said. “We’ll get your test.”

He seemed surprised by how quickly I agreed.

“But when the results come back, Brandon, I want you to remember this moment. Remember that you looked at your own newborn son and decided that your first instinct was to distrust your wife.”

He said nothing.
