Social media posts often claim that a homemade mixture of garlic and cloves can permanently restore gray hair without hair dye. While garlic and cloves contain beneficial plant compounds, there is no scientific evidence that applying them to your scalp can permanently reverse gray hair or restore natural pigment.
Gray hair is usually a normal part of aging, and no home remedy has been proven to reverse it permanently.
Why Does Hair Turn Gray?
Hair gets its color from cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin.
As we age:
- Melanin production gradually decreases.
- Hair follicles produce less pigment.
- New hair grows in gray, silver, or white.
Other factors that may contribute include:
- Genetics (the biggest factor)
- Smoking
- Vitamin B12 deficiency
- Iron deficiency
- Thyroid disorders
- Chronic stress (may contribute in some cases)
Can Garlic Restore Hair Color?
Garlic contains sulfur compounds and antioxidants that may support overall scalp health, but there is no reliable evidence that garlic restores melanin or permanently darkens gray hair.
Applying raw garlic directly to the scalp may even cause:
- Skin irritation
- Burning
- Contact dermatitis
- Allergic reactions
What About Cloves?
Cloves contain eugenol, a natural compound with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.
Although cloves are commonly used in cooking and some traditional remedies, there is no evidence that they reverse gray hair or stimulate pigment production.
Clove oil should always be diluted before applying to the skin, as concentrated essential oils can irritate or burn the scalp.
