Kidney Health: Why “One-Hour” Herbal Cures Can Be Dangerous Claims

  • by

The kidneys are remarkable organs that continuously filter waste from the blood, regulate fluid and mineral levels, and help maintain important functions throughout the body. Kidney problems can develop gradually, and in some cases a person may have significant kidney disease without obvious symptoms in the early stages.

That is why claims that a particular herb can “restart damaged kidneys” or stop kidney failure within one hour should be treated with extreme caution. There is no established herbal remedy that can restore damaged kidney tissue or reverse kidney failure in an hour.

The herb shown in the image may be used in traditional herbal practices, but identifying a plant correctly is essential before consuming it. Many plants can resemble one another, and wild plants may also be contaminated with pesticides, chemicals, heavy metals, or microorganisms.

Kidney disease requires a different approach depending on its cause and severity. High blood pressure, diabetes, infections, kidney stones, urinary obstruction, autoimmune conditions, certain medications, and other health problems can all affect kidney function. Treating the underlying cause may sometimes improve kidney function, particularly when the problem is detected early.

Hydration is also more complicated than simply drinking large amounts of water. People with advanced kidney disease may have individualized fluid restrictions, and excessive fluid intake can sometimes be harmful. The appropriate amount depends on kidney function and the advice of the person’s healthcare team.
