Apples can stay crisp and delicious for weeks—or become soft and wrinkled surprisingly quickly—depending on how you store them.
If you’ve bought a large bag of apples and want to keep them fresh for as long as possible, the refrigerator is usually your best friend.
Keep Apples Refrigerated
For longer storage, place apples in the refrigerator, ideally in the crisper drawer.
The cooler temperature slows down the natural ripening process and helps apples retain their firmness and juiciness for much longer than they would at room temperature.
Keep the refrigerator around 32–40°F (0–4°C) when possible.
Don’t Wash Them Before Storing
It’s best to wait until you’re ready to eat an apple before washing it.
Extra moisture on the skin can encourage spoilage. Store apples dry and wash them thoroughly under running water just before eating.
