How to Clean a Greasy Stove With the Plastic-Bag Method

  • by

A greasy stovetop can be one of the most frustrating areas of the kitchen to clean. Oil splashes, food residue, sauce, and burnt-on grease can quickly build up around the burners, leaving the surface looking dull and dirty.

The good news is that you don’t always need expensive cleaning products or hours of scrubbing. A simple homemade cleaning method using a plastic bag or plastic wrap can help loosen stubborn grease and make the cleaning process much easier.

Before starting, make sure the stove is completely switched off and has cooled down. If you have a gas stove, turn off the gas supply if appropriate, and never attempt to clean hot burners or grates.

Start by removing the removable burner grates and caps. Place them in large sturdy plastic bags or a suitable container. Avoid using thin bags that could tear or leak.

For a simple homemade degreasing mixture, combine warm water with a small amount of dishwashing liquid. Dish soap is particularly useful for greasy surfaces because it helps break down oils and food residue.

For heavier buildup, you can add a small amount of baking soda to the cleaning mixture to create a mild paste. Avoid using abrasive powders or rough scrubbers on surfaces that can scratch easily.

Apply the cleaning mixture to the greasy areas using a sponge or microfiber cloth. Make sure the surface is damp rather than flooded. You don’t want liquid running into the burner openings, ignition components, electrical controls, or other sensitive areas.

For removable grates, place them inside a sturdy plastic bag after applying the cleaning solution. Seal the bag and allow the mixture to sit for a while.
