There is no single food that can destroy cancer cells overnight or eliminate cancer in 10 minutes. Cancer treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or other medical treatments.
However, good nutrition is an important part of supporting the body during and after cancer treatment. Certain foods provide protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that can help maintain strength and overall health.
Here are 10 nutritious foods that can be included in a balanced diet when appropriate.
1. Berries
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries provide fiber and plant compounds such as polyphenols. They are easy to add to oatmeal, yogurt, or smoothies.
2. Broccoli
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain fiber, vitamin C, folate, and naturally occurring plant compounds. Steam or lightly cook broccoli to make it easier to eat.
3. Beans and Lentils
Beans, chickpeas, and lentils provide plant-based protein, fiber, iron, and other nutrients. They can be added to soups, salads, stews, or vegetable dishes.
4. Fatty Fish
Salmon, sardines, and mackerel provide protein and omega-3 fatty acids. They can be baked, grilled, or added to salads and vegetable meals.
5. Leafy Green Vegetables
Spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and similar vegetables provide folate, vitamin K, carotenoids, and other nutrients.
6. Tomatoes
Tomatoes provide vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene. Cooking tomatoes with a little healthy oil can make them particularly versatile in sauces and soups.
7. Nuts and Seeds
Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and pumpkin seeds provide healthy fats, protein, minerals, and fiber. A small handful can make a convenient nutrient-dense snack.
8. Citrus Fruits
Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and other citrus fruits provide vitamin C and other plant compounds. Whole fruit is generally preferable to juice because it contains more fiber.
9. Whole Grains
Oats, brown rice, barley, and whole-grain breads provide carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They can provide useful energy when appetite is reduced.
10. Plain Yogurt
Yogurt can provide protein, calcium, and other nutrients. Choose plain varieties and add berries or other fruit for flavor.
A Simple Daily Plate
A practical meal can combine:
½ plate: vegetables and/or fruit
¼ plate: protein such as fish, beans, eggs, or poultry
¼ plate: whole grains or another nutritious carbohydrate
Add a small amount of healthy fat from foods such as olive oil, nuts, or seeds.
One Important Reminder
These foods do not replace cancer treatment and should not be described as “destroying cancer cells.” Some foods contain compounds that researchers study in laboratory and observational research, but that does not mean eating the food will eliminate cancer in a person.
During cancer treatment, nutritional needs can also change. Some people may need additional calories or protein, while others may need dietary adjustments because of nausea, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, mouth sores, or treatment-related side effects. A doctor or registered dietitian can personalize the diet accordingly.
Food can support the body, but cancer itself requires appropriate medical evaluation and treatment.
