Ginger and Cholesterol: Can One Simple Drink Improve Heart Health?

Social media is full of claims that mixing ginger with a “secret ingredient” can clear arteries, eliminate atherosclerosis, and dramatically lower cholesterol in just three days. While ginger is a healthy spice with several well-studied benefits, there is no scientific evidence that it can reverse atherosclerosis or replace cholesterol-lowering medications.

Here’s what research actually shows.

Why Cholesterol Matters

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that your body needs to build cells and produce hormones. However, high levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol can contribute to plaque buildup inside arteries over many years, increasing the risk of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Peripheral artery disease

Reducing LDL cholesterol usually requires long-term lifestyle changes and, for some people, prescription medications.

What Can Ginger Do?

Ginger contains natural compounds called gingerols and shogaols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Research suggests ginger may:

  • Support healthy digestion.
  • Help reduce nausea.
  • Provide mild anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Contribute to overall heart health as part of a balanced diet.

Some studies have found small improvements in cholesterol or triglyceride levels with regular ginger intake, but the effects are generally modest and do not occur within a few days.

Can Ginger Reverse Atherosclerosis?

No.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic condition in which fatty plaques build up inside the arteries over many years.

There is no food, drink, herb, or spice that can dissolve arterial plaque in three days.

The most effective ways to slow its progression include:

  • Eating a heart-healthy diet.
  • Staying physically active.
  • Not smoking.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Controlling blood pressure and diabetes.
  • Taking cholesterol-lowering medication when prescribed.
