Ginger, Garlic, Onion, Lemon & Honey: A Traditional Home Remedy Explained

Natural home remedies have been passed down through generations, and one of the most popular combinations includes fresh ginger, garlic, onion, lemon juice, and honey. This mixture is often used during cold and flu season or simply as part of a wellness routine.

While each ingredient contains nutrients and beneficial plant compounds, it’s important to remember that no homemade remedy has been proven to prevent or cure diseases, and it should never replace medical treatment.

Here’s how to make this traditional mixture at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium ginger root (about 150 g), peeled and grated
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8–10 garlic cloves, peeled and lightly crushed
  • Juice of 2 fresh lemons
  • 1 cup (340 g) raw honey

Equipment

  • 1 clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
  • Grater
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Spoon

Step 1: Prepare the Ginger

Wash, peel, and grate the fresh ginger into fine shreds.

Step 2: Slice the Onion

Peel the onion and cut it into thin slices.

Step 3: Prepare the Garlic

Peel the garlic cloves and gently crush them with the side of a knife. This helps release their natural compounds.

Step 4: Juice the Lemons

Squeeze the juice from two fresh lemons and remove any seeds.

Step 5: Fill the Jar

Layer the grated ginger, onion slices, and garlic cloves inside the clean glass jar.

Step 6: Add the Lemon Juice

Pour the fresh lemon juice over the ingredients.

Step 7: Add the Honey

Pour the honey into the jar until all the ingredients are covered.

Use a clean spoon to gently stir everything together.

Step 8: Let It Rest

Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate it for 7 days. During this time, the ingredients will release their juices and blend with the honey.

Stir the mixture once a day if desired.

Step 9: How to Use

After 7 days, many people choose to take 1 teaspoon daily as part of their routine.

If the flavour is too strong, you can stir it into a cup of warm (not boiling) water or herbal tea.
