You may have seen social media posts claiming that placing a roll of toilet paper in your refrigerator is a “secret hack” that keeps food fresh and removes odors. While there’s a small amount of truth behind the idea, it’s not a proven or particularly effective solution.
Here’s what you should know.
The Theory
Toilet paper is made from absorbent paper fibers, so some people believe it can:
- Absorb excess moisture.
- Reduce unpleasant refrigerator odors.
- Help keep the inside of the fridge drier.
While toilet paper can absorb a little moisture from the air, its effect inside a refrigerator is minimal.
Does It Really Work?
Partially—but only to a limited extent.
A fresh roll may absorb a small amount of humidity, but it is not designed as a moisture or odor absorber and becomes damp fairly quickly.
It won’t:
- Keep food fresh longer.
- Prevent mold.
- Eliminate strong odors.
- Replace proper refrigerator maintenance.
